Things that need to stop being considered "punk", posthaste:

1. Folk-"punk". If I hear one more simpering song about childhood, sung by someone who sounds like they're three years old and backed up by agonizingly untuned acoustic guitar, someone is getting their eyeballs dug out with a blunt pair of scissors. Look, I don't come to shows to hug ( Read more... )

you forgot the worst one, synyster gates. i'm pretty sure that's the spelling too. it's so funny to see a ton of the hardcore... excuse me metalcore... oh, i mean metal now, bands that were playing hellfest and putting out records on trustkill are suddenly on metal blade or relapse. avenged sevenfold are from goddamn huntington beach, definitely a bastion of metal. they are as embarrassing as the black metal band who accidentally uses a band photo where, just to the left of the guy holding the replica axe in the frosty woods, you can see the drummer's mom's house with a "happy easter flag". i saw a guitar magazine that had AS on it that said "the next best metal band", sadly on the same cover as some story about death (the band obviously).

i have to say though, and you'll probably tie me up and light me on fire for it, but the ones who supposedly were responsible for the tide of horrific metalcore bands, overcast, were a damn good band and i think brain fair has an amazing throat.

Brian Fair was in Shadows Fall, right? That means he gets a pass because that band helped get me into metal.

But yeah, overall I really want hardcore to get the fuck out of metal. Obviously some hXc kids are pretty awesome (though the music is generally not my thing these days), but it seems like so many of them are basically football jocks with tattoos. I wish they'd all just start listening to Dave Matthews or something, and stop loitering at the fringes of my subculture.

he was the second vocalist when they got signed to century media. you should definitely check out overcast if you are into shadow's fall. when they played here they had a sign taped to the kick drum "we need weed" haha.

they have a myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/63075972 check out "apocalypse upon us". they were supposedly re-recording 12 of their songs but i guess that never happened.

i'm sort of personal friends (well, friends-of-friends, more accurately, but have hung out with on an intimate and semi-regular basis) with erik petersen of folk-punx outfit mischief brew fame...

don't tell anybody (especially any of his fans) but he sort of doesn't identify with a lot of his fans very much any more. he wrote that song about growing up and moving on from being a punk, and he kind of meant it.

i like his music, though not enough to listen to it regularly. erik the person, on the other hand, is one hell of an awesome person. just thought i'd put that out there.

also, mindless "offensiveness" may be not particularly offensive anymore, but it's still a lot of fun. see TSOL's code blue, at least 3/4ths of fear's catalog, and many others. beef beef beef, beef baloney!
