Some of them - Vikernes obviously was/is, for example. But some of the bands, like Enslaved, just have a lot of geeky lyrics about Norse mythology, and never undertook any serious campaign to bring back the old religion. I think it says a lot that when Moynihan/Soderlind get into the whole "blah blah resurgent pagan atavism" bullshit, they concentrate almost exclusively on two musicians - Vikernes and Hendrik Mobus, whose band released, like, two demo tapes and then faded into obscurity. And I think Vikernes' interest in that sort of thing came at least in part from being an ex-skinhead raised by a racist mother, rather than being involved in black metal. I think describing the whole genre of music as such, especially factoring in bands outside of Norway, is overblown and sensationalistic. I mean, the church burnings are one thing, but metal bands have been thinking Vikings are awesome since "Immigrant Song."
