[Most of Varric's memory has come back by now. There's a few things that still escape him, especially around the zombies and what he suspects did him in, but he's gotten to the point where he at least remembers some of his time at the Keep.
He's heading for the kitchen in the barracks when he spots someone unfamiliar. Normally he'd keep on going, maybe with a nod or something, but he does indeed recognize that coat. It's enough to give him pause, and he stops, raising an eyebrow at the guy.]
[That's a good thing, because Riku might have to protest your being concerned. Nobody should worry about him.
Riku goes back and forth about whether he should ask the question that's been gnawing at him or not. Part of him feels like it's too personal to ask, that he should just keep quiet and figure it out for himself. But he needs to know.]
Varric... what happened to me? Why can't I remember anything?
[It's a good thing Varric doesn't get concerned about people, then! Nope, no concern here.
And then he grimaces slightly, because, yeah, that's a valid question, but it's not one Varric really wants to be the one to answer. Varric's still of the opinion that, as he doesn't yet remember his apparent death, it isn't that big of a deal, but that doesn't change that getting told you died isn't exactly the best news ever.]
Might not be that easy to hear, Silver.
Consensus seems to be that we died. Apparently death doesn't stick around here: you die, you just wake up a few days later with no memories. I'm guessing it had something to do with these zombies, but I still don't remember a lot of that.
Strangely enough, the revelation doesn't send him reeling as much it might have. He might have died, but he was also here now, alive and well. Whatever had happened before, it was all water under the bridge. It's a little bit unnerving, to know that something happened before to kill him, but he can't remember it, and it's no use fretting over the memories he can't force himself to yet regain.]
...I see.
[Zombies? Riku takes closer notice of the journal entry he'd opened to, but it doesn't spark any recognition.]
I guess those memories are still eluding me for now, too.
Does this sort of thing happen a lot around here?
[Dying, he means, although he's left it purposely vague.]
They'll come back. Mine're still getting there, too.
[Varric would say he's surprised Riku's taking dying this well, but he's really not. Might change when he actually remembers the dying bit, of course.]
From what I remember? Not really. Before the whole sudden illness fiasco, there's only two deaths that I can remember. While I was here, anyway. Might've been more before I got here, but secondhand info seems to be a little bit slower in coming back.
[He shakes his head slightly.]
Nothing else like an outbreak of zombies since I've been here, either.
I. I don't even know what this is.unleashedpowerSeptember 23 2011, 21:24:31 UTC
[He's only taking it well because his memories haven't quite given him the extent of what it means, yet. Death is to quit living, but the concept is still an abstract one.]
Then I guess I'll just have to wait.
Secondhand information can be unreliable, too. That's why it's better to find things out on your own.
[A slight frown.]
Though I think I'll try to avoid dying in the future.

Usually. Hard to find out about things that happened before you got here on your own, though.
[And that gets a chuckle.]
Smart plan, Silver. I'd appreciate that, too.

Then I guess the next time we talk, I'll have hopefully remembered everything.

You better. Or the next time we talk will involve a lot more alcohol.
Might involve a lot more alcohol, anyway, depending on what we remember.
Reply
That might not be entirely unwelcome, given recent developments.

My sentiments exactly. I'll hold you to that.
