I love them, too. Many years ago when I was in the Navy I was scheduled to rotate to three years of shore duty. I was (am) a colossal astronomy geek, and my astronomy-geekdom at work translated to an obsession with celestial navigation. Yes, on a nuclear submarine. Details, details... So anyway, my XO recognized and encouraged my obsession, and it happened that at the time I was supposed to go to shore duty, the USNO had an opening for a petty-officer, so he submitted my name and resume to whatever office it is that oversees such things. I already had experience baby-sitting telescopes and collecting and processing astronomical observations when I was in college, and I had made a bit of a name for myself in the Navy having developed a new technique for celestial navigation using a submarine periscope. So I was basically the top candidate for the job, to the point that they were already looking at housing for me in DC. Then, just as all of this was happening, my XO managed to get three DUIs in as many weeks, and landed himself in the ( ... )
