You "had a really good time" and "enjoyed his company" and he's now leaving messages to follow up unanswered messages? Yeah, give him a second date! It may be just what you need as an air bubble in teh stress.

you're right, it is almost surreal dealing with a personal minidrama and trying to cope without letting others know. Thanks for the advice and empathy--you probably see stressed out students all the time, particularly of the graduate variety.
yes! I also *finally* have a thesis reader, although she can't read it this summer so I won't get my degree until December/end of fall quarter. Just one step at a time. And, I have to say, I am feeling more excited about this potential project than my last one...one word: FREAKERY!
