How I met your father anonymous August 12 2009, 00:52:51 UTC
America is putting one of his littlest states (your choice) to bed, and the state asks about his/her rarely-seen father. America launches into the story of "how I met your father", spinning it as very fairy tale-esque and romantic. The catch is that in flashbacks we see that the events leading to the state's conception were very sad/skanky/tragic/cracky, as anon prefers.

Ok, this is a little different than what the OP asked for. Instead of being a rarely seen father, this is about America and Hawaii's deceased mother, also named Hawaii. It was a stereotypical dark and stormy night, complete with thunder, lightning, rain, wind, the works. The weather hadn’t been particularly nice for the past few days, but it had gotten worse, with thunderstorms hitting on and off all day, only now becoming a constant as the day ended and the evening began ( ... )

--Blood, so much blood, and he’s yelling at her to hold on, and the baby is screaming, and he needs her to stay with him, she’s been through so much worse, this can’t be what finally does her in, but she just smiles and closes her eyes…--

“…All right. What story do you wanna here?”

“I don’t care, any one of them is ok! They’re all good, I bet!”

His smile returns, just a little. All right.

“Ok, then let’s try this one…once upon a time, there was a great hero and a beautiful queen…”

[This didn't fit in with the rest of part 1.]

---1898---

It was Alfred’s first visit to Hawaiʻi. The ‘Big Island’.

His bosses and his people had interacted with the people of the island for years now, but he hadn’t gone down to the islands before because while his people were involved down there, it wasn’t his territory. He didn’t really have any reason to go down there….besides, there were enough problems at home without him going and meddling around with other things at the moment. The Civil War and Reconstruction was over, America was thriving in the Gilded Age, there was no point in screwing any of that up.

But he had to go down now ( ... )

“Papa, was Mother really that pretty?”

“Course she was! Where do you think you get it from? Except for the eyes, you look just like her.”

“Does that mean I’m that pretty to?”

“You will be someday, I bet. Now, do you wanna hear the rest of the story or not?”

“I’ll listen!!”

The two Nations had started talking after their interesting meeting, and Alfred was rather impressed with his new territory. She was smart and funny, and pretty… She reminded him a little of Mexico, with less of a ‘crazy stalker’ thing going on.

She’d shown him around a bit, pointed out some of the more interesting sights while telling him about her history and her hopes that they’d be able to peacefully coexist together as territory and country.

“You should have seen this land before the missionaries and Europeans arrived, America. It was amazing…it still is, but things changed. I suppose it was bound to happen, though. What about you? What is your land like?”

His land…?

“It….it’s indescribable, really. There’s so much diversity…huge mountain ranges at both ends of the country, fields of gold and blue skies…cities bustling with progress…beaches with white sand, deserts with lives all their own…and the people, the people, just…they make everything worth it. I’d make all the same mistakes again if they ended up leading happy and ( ... )

”Papa, what did Mother’s name mean? It’s Hawaiian, right?”

“Yup. It means ‘heaven’. Perfect name, I think.”

“That’s pretty, papa!! What about her last name, what did that mean?”

“…You know, I really don’t know.”

---1920---Alfred didn’t visit Okalani again for a while. They wrote letters often, her way of informing him of the affairs of the territory. Things seemed be going well there. They had made a Tourism Committee to help ‘promote the territory to the world’, and it seemed to help the economy of the islands. There were cars there, not many, but it was a start ( ... )

“Was Mother sick, papa?”

“Shh, just listen!”She was sick. He didn’t realize it until later, much later, but Okalani was dying. Hawaii was changing, her islands were going from republic to territory and were well on their way to becoming a state, and when that happened they wouldn’t need her anymore ( ... )

“I know that museums!! It’s in Honolulu, I go there all the time!! They’ve got lots of great stuff!!”

“I know, and your mother helped build it. You’ve got her to thank for that.”

“What happens next, papa? When does President FDR visit Mother?”

“Soon, princess, soon.”

---1934---Alfred visited again with his boss at the time, FDR. Or, as he called him, Frankie ( ... )

---1941---

Pearl Harbor had been attacked.

His men were dying on her land.

They both felt the pain.

He didn’t realize that it hurt her more than him. She’d been getting weaker, this had hit her harder as a result.

He didn’t see her until after the attack. They both looked like hell…but it was the first time he really noticed her decline, and it scared him.

She was asleep when he visited her, bandages wrapped around her head and chest. Alfred didn’t stay long. He couldn’t look at Okalani. Not like this.

He kissed her goodbye and made a promise she didn’t here.

“Japan’ll pay for this. I swear to you, this won’t go unpunished. I’ll be the hero. For both of us.”

Then America went off to war.

“Was she ok, papa? She had to be, because I’m here, so she didn’t die then…”

“Lani, she was fine. Up and about after about a week. Stubborn woman, your mother was.”

“Just like me?”

“…Yes, just like you.”

---1958---Between the war and 1958, Alfred visited Okalani a few more times. He’d had other problems. Another war, a cold war, was starting, a red scare was spreading, and for a brief time, he’d forgotten about the problems in Hawaii ( ... )

“Papa! Papa, you haven’t told me the end of the story!!”

Alfred blinked, coming out of his memories to face his slightly irritated daughter.

Huh. Must’ve lost myself…

“Papa, tell me how it ends, what happens after you and Mother had me?”

He hesitates, just for a moment. Lani is too young to know the truth. But she knows her mother is gone and has never been there, but…he can’t tell her the truth, for her sake. Maybe for his sake.

And then he smiles at her, that bright heroic grin that’s gotten him through so much.

“After you were born…your mother went back home, and decided that she would always watch over you in her own special way. The hibiscus flowers that she loved…? She became a flower, and in every single one, she watches you and blooms with happiness. She’s just as proud of you as I am.”

Lani liked this, and hugged her father. He hugged her tightly, not wanting to let her go.

Don’t grow up too fast, Lani. She smiles and yawns at him, rubbing an eyes sleepily, and he gets up ( ... )

Alfred closes the door quietly, and begins to go down the hall, when a small hand tugs on his pants leg.

…Oh, no.

He looks down into the tired and wide eyed face of his youngest son, Nikolai. Alaska.

When did he get up? How long was he standing there for?

“…Daddy…? I had a bad dream about General Winter and some snow horses…”

Alfred smiles slightly. Oh, children. He crouches down to face his son and picks him up, carrying him back to his room.

“Well, we can’t have any nightmares, can we, Nicki?”

“Can you tell me a story about you and Nana?”

“Sure, why not. Well, one upon a time, there was a cold war, and there were two brave and stubborn soldiers…I was the hero, of course, and your Nana…well…”
