Part 10, Spain-->Romano-->?, AU set in 1905 anonymous May 4 2010, 23:54:50 UTC
Original request, from Part 10: http://hetalia-kink.livejournal.com/13125.html?thread=33315653#t33315653

Romano has been in love with Spain for a while. However, when he finally gets the courage to tell him how he feels, due to his tsundereness and Spain's obviousness, Spain (unintentionally) rejects him. Heartbroken, Romano gets comfort and help from another nation, and they end up falling in love. When they reveal their relationship to everyone else, Spain ends up jealous.

tl;dr: Spain rejects Romano. Romano hooks up with someone else. Spain gets jealous.

I seriously hope the OP is ok with AU, also I don’t think I can work in all your bonuses - I’ll try, but no promises. Sorry, OP! Also, the third in the triangle may come as a surprise, if you don’t know me (and if you do too, maybe, but I ship him so hard with Romano it’s not even fun). Since you didn’t specify it in the prompt, can you please let me know if you prefer Romano to end up with ( ... )

Antonio can't remember the first time he saw Romano. He has always been part of the Sicilian background, like the tender vines of the tomatoes, or the azure sky and the green sea.

He remembers a childhood passed bothering him, poking fun at his eternally red and angry face, at the curl that sticks out of his forehead and won't surrender to the comb. He remembers sand and yellow dust sticking to sweaty cheeks and childish limbs, he remembers the cold water of the Ionius, catching starfishes to leave in the sun to dry, scratching mussels from the cliffs to eat them with just a bit of salt and lemon, hiding between rocks and low bushes to scare the washerwomen coming back from the spring, killing an octopus by biting its head, or capturing blue and green lizards and remaining amazed at their ability to escape by abandoning their tail, he remembers an happy childhood and its cruelty without malice, and Romano throught it all, following, running after him on his shorter legs, an hint of whine in his voice, calling him 'idiot' and 'stupid ( ... )

He shouldn't be so surprised. Boys their age grow in leaps and spurts, and Romano went throught a fever this winter that made the family fear for his life, they even wrote about that. Antonio himself has probably changed a lot.

But he wasn’t prepared. For Antonio, Romano was a living monument to his own childhood happiness, bathed in the sun like a white Greek temple, perfect like a Raphaelian angel, with a broncio that for Antonio means more than a thousand cheery smiles.

As he had done all those other times in the past, upon his arrival in Sicily, the very moment he had set his belonging in his old room, he had taken just a second to appreciate the view from his house, the light grey, almost white village, made of stone houses clustered together like sheeps hearing the wolf’s howling, slowly digrading towards the perfect blue line of the sea. Then, he had gone straight to his friend’s house, walking along the narrow streets between sun-bleached buildings, knowing every turn of corner and sudden step.

He had not recognized him at ( ... )

Antonio’s night has been awful, populated with monsters of anxiety, and a obscure sort of guilt sitting firmly on his chest throught it all. He has awoken at least five times, always with Romano’s name on his lips, always with that question in his head: why was he so angry?

Usually, Romano would welcome him with his usual display of hidden affection - he’d hit him and call him idiot, but he’d cling to his arm desperately, talking quickly of nothing, with the excuse of showing him around what little change may have happened in the small village - like he was scared Antonio would go away again if he let him.

His reaction had never been one of downright refusal. Yes, it was true that Antonio had never wrote, after having promised he would - but they always exchanged similar promises in the past, and those never held any significance - neither of them ever wrote. Antonio simply had no head to remember this kind of thing, or at least he didn’t when he was younger, while Romano hated doing anything that could be constructed as an ( ... )

I can’t help but write Spain as a funny dork, even in angsty roles.

Fuck, I missed writing in this style. Purple is the prettiest color of the rainbow!

Now that was a change of setting - from Protestant Berlincest to Mediterranean Catholic Molestation. You can probably spot the one constant, however - it’s definitely a delicious, delicious kink by now.

Broncio is Italian for ‘pout’. I use it because I think that, while Anglo-Saxons are aware of the concept, it was on the Mediterranean that the tecnique was perfectionated as the classical tsundere weapon.

I also have to add that part of the reason I love this pairing is that Spain’s courtship of Romano actually kind of looks like classical latin lover behaviour, with a ‘male’ begging the beautiful girl of his dreams to please please put out at least once before they die, and a ‘female’ saving herself for marriage and recurring to any tecnique to keep the male away, because if she surrenders, she’s ‘lost’.

Yeah, you should probably live in my head for that to make sense.

Oi, least ( ... )

Author!anon, you have no idea how excited I am to read another fill by you, especially after reading AND LOVING Shame.

So far, this is great! I dont' want to guess what the secret plot devices are - I'd rather be kept in suspense. So tsundere, Romano...

I can't wait for more! Please keep up the good work!

YAY SOMEONE IS FILLING MY REQUEST!!! Happiness~

AUs are fine, it's cool if you can't fit in all the bonuses, I don't know you (sorry...) so I have no idea where this is going and am thrilled because of it. I like surprises. I'd actually prefer if he does end up with Spain, but if somehow Mysterious Other Person gets a happy ending too? I'm a sucker for happy endings, but if that doesn't work with what you're doing then that's fine too.

I like where this is going and am excited for more, whenever they come. I've got RL stuff too, so I understand if updates are spread out.

I don't know whether to be FREAKING THE FUCK OUT of excitement that you're writing this, or bawling. Oh man. fffffffffffffffff I hope they end up together. Mostly because I want to read Spain/Romano written by you. But somehow I get the feeling that even if they don't, I'll love it anyways.

tl;dr i love you, and i'm so glad this is anonymous because oh my god what a creeper.

This is exciting! Can't wait to see where this is going to go (I think whichever way it ends up I'm going to enjoy the ride).

I have no idea who you are; I'm really bad at figuring things like that out. But I'll guess at the third part of the triangle anyway, even if you don't respond. Mayhaps I can subliminally influence you (fufufu):

Serious Guess: Greece?

More Less Serious Guess: Iceland?

I vote for a happy ending o/ (if only because these two already break my heart) -- but whichever way you choose to go with it is up to you. :-]

i haven't read "shame," but I'm loving this so far!

WTF WHY DO I ALWAYS UPDATE SO FAST - the ‘smaller but faster’ update format really works, it seems. But don’t have too much faith, it will still take a while for next one.

Hi old and new anons! I'm just glad I'm not disappointing, I felt kind of bad referring to "Shame", since I don't know if this will be as good as that and I'm also still weird about receiving compliments about my writing. I seriously hope both fans of "Shame" and generic Spain/Romano fans can enjoy this.

To avoid confusion, I'll clarify that in this universe Antonio's family moved to Berlin when he was 14/15-ish.

I'm doing like I saw other anons doing and posting all answers like this to save comment space. So, I'll answer only those that need answering, but believe me when I say that every single comments, even if it's just a single word, warms my heart lots. Also y'all get nicknames. Sorry.

OP: yay! You like it! I realize I'm sort of taking your prompt and running with it for the hills... But I like jealous!Spain too much. I'll have him suffer lots, I'm afraid. ( ... )

So, Antonio swallows the weird, hateful sensation that has been growing in the pit of his stomach, puts on his best smile and waves again, this time calling "Romano!" too.

He had sort of expected Romano to scoff and pretend he hadn't seen him - that boy could always hold his grudges, when he thought it was worth it. It didn't happen often, but Antonio remembers at least a summer in which Romano had not spoken to him for two weeks straight.

Then again, they were eight-years-old and after about three days Romano had gotten tired of not communicating and they had invented a special secret gesture language that...

What he didn't expect, however, was that the stranger would notice him, touch Romano on the shoulder (again!) and pull him into a quick, whispered conversation - keeping his mouth really close to Romano's ear, a thing that would have gotten Antonio an headbutt at least.

And when Romano, still blushing, seems not only to listen to what the other had to say, but even to let himself be convinced, Antonio has to sit.

The two change ( ... )

”Why did you disappear?”

”Disappear?”

”You haven’t come back here for three years!”

”My family - they always found something else to do for me. It’s a long trip from Germany to here, you know? And they don’t have a reason anymore to come here, I had to insist to...”

”Whatever. Why didn’t you wrote me all this, then!”

”B-but I never wrote in the past and it has never been a problem...”

Romano raises an eyebrow. “You mean your disappearance hasn’t got anything to do with what I said?”

”Uhu?” Antonio is trying to keep up with the conversation, but it’s hard when he’s looking into Romano’s eyes - have they always had this piercing quality? He’s sure at least the gold reflexes are new.

”What I said the last time we saw each other! Don’t you remember? We were in that clearing in the bushes behind the old tower, it was the sunset...”

“How romantic.” Herakles comments, amused, and Romano ‘umpf’s and blindly waves behind himself with an hand, hitting him on one leg.

Antonio is beginning to think he’s missing something. “I think I’m missing ( ... )

”I said something else, didn’t I?”

”Yes, it was weird, I never really understood what you meant...”

Romano snorts. “Oh, really?”

”Perhaps you’ve been too subtle.” Herakles comments, drawing something with his finger on Romano’s neck - he seems to have lost any interest in the conversation, concentrating only on showering Romano with a great deal of inappropriate attention.

That’s just plain impolite, and why is Romano accepting it? Why he’s not yelling at him to back off, instead of simply batting his hands off with one of his usual ‘I’m doing it but I don’t mean it’ gestures?

Antonio can’t help the anger that’s starting to slip in his tone, even if he’s not really sure of how or why.

”Well, I remember you telling me that you always loved me as a friend and that your love had grown with you and... it’s hard to keep up the conversation if you distract Romano, Herakles.”

”Yes, be good for a second, Lè.”

At least, Romano’s reacting. Wait, did he just call Herakles with a nickname? He never used a nickname for Antonio! “I... uh... how ( ... )
