Spain/Romano Homophobia

As a result of being sexually repressed psychologically and religion, Romano resorts to homophobia as a defense mechanism against any feelings he harbors for Spain and any advances Spain does in turn. The key part I want though is subtlety on their feelings for each other and a relatively slow progression of Romano coming to terms with accepting himself for who he is. I really don't want this to be the generic fic where one kiss or whatever from Spain magically fixes all of Romano's problems. This process needs to be slow, tough, and hopefully satisfactory for both them in the end.
Bonus: Putting Romano's other insecurities and flaws into the mix would be wonderful. Also the use of country names.

I feel bad that I’ve been taking so long to start this, so I’m going to post this small part that I technically shouldn’t have been working on. -_-; But I’m getting so frustrated with exam week and all the things I have to finish that I just want to take a break and throw this out there. After this intro there’s going to be a sequence of past memories, but then the majority of the rest of the fic will take place in the present. Feedback is so very much appreciated! OP, I hope this story will end up pleasing you <3It had been a long flight. Romano’s eyelids fluttered as he stared out the window of the taxi cab speeding through New York City. Everything was a blur of multi-colored lights against a black sky. New York was a fun city to visit, even when the nations had a conference to attend like this week, but not with jet lag. Romano really just wanted to close his eyes and sleep for a long time, but someone had to stay awake to pay the taxi driver when he stopped, and Veneziano was already slumped against his brother and out

Veneziano muttered something in his sleep and turned his head to bury it further into Romano’s jacket. A tap on the window sounded, and Romano turned to glare at Spain’s face just inches from his. Impatient moron. Romano grabbed the handle to the door and jerked it open, smacking Spain and causing him to stumble backwards.
“Romano!” Spain cried, rubbing at his face after he caught his balance. “That was not cute!”
“Shut up,” Romano replied, and then he turned to Veneziano to continue in his attempt to wake him. “Come on Veneziano. We’re here.”
Veneziano gave a quiet groan and then a muttered, “I dun wanna get up.” He snuggled into Romano again as Spain aww’d in the background. What a pain. Romano didn’t even know whether he was referring to Veneziano or Spain.
Then stupid potato bastard Germany was walking over, and saying, “I can carry him to our room, if you’d like.”
Romano grit his teeth and hissed, “No, I would not like, you fucking queer.” Germany looked momentarily taken aback, and Romano turned to try and

Oh gosh. This is looking like it will be one of those wonderfully horrible fics where I end up so sad and wanting to hug someone because the story is so sad and sweet but I feel so happy in the end because it was a good story and hopefully there's a happy ending...
/blushes/ I mean, its looking good so far, keep it up!
Oh my god.....this is so amazing. I don't even know what to say. I know it's only the first part but it's already looking so good. :')
How you just made a simple scene of a cab ride and then going to a hotel room be able to hold so much emotion and foreshadowing already just dazzles me. The elevator ride and walk to their room especially just tells so much, yet is only a taste of their feelings. And guh just Romano in general and his reactions and thoughts and EVERYTHING is just so perfect. Spain too, just so IC and exactly how I picture him to be.
Ugh I wish I could be more coherent, but this is just so good and everything I hoped it would be so far I just can't form words. I'm just so happy that you decided to fill this, but like I said don't stress yourself with this! Finals and schoolwork definatly come first! :)

Ahhh! I'm so happy someone filled this! You did an excellent job; and Romano's feelings are portrayed perfectly. I definitely like how you've worked in how he feels both sick, yet attracted at the same time. Whatever! I just really, really like it. <3

Romano grit his teeth and hissed, “No, I would not like, you fucking queer.” Germany looked momentarily taken aback, I think this is my favorite moment, out of many good ones, just because it seems so real and also so in character. It's deeply indicative of the kind of situation you're setting up.

Ok, lots of scenes from the past here. Then to the present. Then to the past for a couple more short times, and then the rest of the story (I think) should be in the present. Sorry if this is irritating ^_^;; I just… love little Romano so much… Plus I really want to set up the love Spain and Romano share and where the homophobia first began.

“Romano!” Spain cried. “What are you doing?!”
Romano huffed and threw his broom to the floor. “I’m sweeping, damn it!” He shouted back. What the fuck was Spain’s problem anyway?!
Spain smacked his forehead. “That’s not how you sweep! You’re just sending the dust flying everywhere!” He walked over and picked up the broom. “Didn’t anyone teach you how to do this? They had to have… Veneziano knows.”
“Veneziano knows,” Romano mocked. He grabbed the broom from Spain’s hands and began to sweep it back and forth with all of his might. No matter how much effort he put into it, though, the dirt was still flying everywhere

“Who are you?”
Romano stopped picking weeds and looked up in surprise. Then he realized he had actually just pulled out a flower again and cursed. Stupid flowers, having stems that got all tangled up in weeds and making it very hard to differentiate between the two. Spain said that if Romano actually kept up with his chores there wouldn’t be so many weeds to confuse him, but Romano hated chores. He was only weeding now because Spain told him that weeds made the flowers sad, and Romano liked flowers and figured that they had never really done anything to deserve a sad life.
But that was not the current issue at hand. The current issue was the very tall, very intimidating stranger that was demanding to know Romano’s identity.
“Who are you?” Romano countered. He kept the flower clutched in front of him like a shield

Romano startled slightly and wondered why Netherlands would ask him that until he realized he was still holding the poor flower from before, its roots dangling and dropping bits of dirt along the way to Spain. “Yes,” he responded awkwardly. He paused in front of the door to Spain’s office and knocked. Usually he just barged inside, but he felt like showing better manners in front of a guest

It had been a bad week. A very, very bad week. It had started with a vase that Romano broke by accident, and then for some reason he couldn’t seem to stop dropping things and breaking them. He had never been so clumsy before, and it was both frustrating and embarrassing. Spain yelled, Romano yelled back, and inevitably something else was broken, but that would always be on purpose. Soon Romano gave up and just stopped trying to clean, and that made Spain even more upset. The house looked terrible, Romano was miserable, Spain was irritated, and even tomatoes were becoming less tasty because Romano couldn’t enjoy them in such an awful atmosphere.
Romano was glaring at a desk, willing it to dust itself, when Spain walked in, dressed as if he were going out. Romano stood up in alarm. He didn’t know they were going out! He wasn’t ready!
“I’m going to see Austria,” Spain said coldly. “And Romano, I want this house clean by the time I get back. Is that understood

He wondered if Spain would remember that he forgot to kiss Romano good-bye. Romano walked over to the window and pulled himself onto the ledge, staring outside to see if Spain had turned his horses around and was riding back to apologize. After a few minutes passed, Romano got down again and looked at the desk that wouldn’t dust itself. He wondered why Spain was going to see Austria. He wondered if Spain would visit with Veneziano, too. He wondered if Veneziano kept Austria’s house as clean as Spain wanted Romano to keep his. He wondered why Veneziano didn’t drop things and struggle to do… everything, really
