Spain/Romano Homophobia

As a result of being sexually repressed psychologically and religion, Romano resorts to homophobia as a defense mechanism against any feelings he harbors for Spain and any advances Spain does in turn. The key part I want though is subtlety on their feelings for each other and a relatively slow progression of Romano coming to terms with accepting himself for who he is. I really don't want this to be the generic fic where one kiss or whatever from Spain magically fixes all of Romano's problems. This process needs to be slow, tough, and hopefully satisfactory for both them in the end.
Bonus: Putting Romano's other insecurities and flaws into the mix would be wonderful. Also the use of country names.

Romano grabbed a tomato and bit into it. It was delicious. His eyes filled with tears as chewing became a struggle and then swallowing an impossibility. He sat there, mouth full of chewed tomato, as his body began to shake and tears burnt wet trails down his cheeks. Spain finally took notice when he sniffed loudly and tried to wipe his nose with his arm

Anon1: ^_^ Thank you! And never fear! While I have nothing against a well-written sad ending, I could never actually write one myself. It’ll probably be bittersweet at the worst ^_^;;
OP: =>_<= You give me too much credit for something as simple as this! But thank you so much! I’m really looking forward to writing this story because of all the complex emotions involved. At the same time, it’s definitely going to be a challenge! But if you like it so far, I’m very happy ^_

WHY IS THIS SO CUTE
and sad, but in a good way<3
Little!Romano being all "nobody loves me!" always breaks my heart, and you write him so well!
(About Netherlands... well, he has a loli complex, okay, but Romano is a male... unless... he has seen him only with the maid clothes, right? I don't like where this is heading... I mean I like it in the sense that I know it will break my heart, but still... :C)
Oh my this is so cute and yet so depressing. I love how you wrote Romano here, most people only put him as a brat with a foul-mouth, but also gave him a childish naivety that and included his fear of abandonment. Also end about unconditional love was just wonderfully done. <333
Also the Netherlands in here...I can't help but suspect that he'll be the instigator of the outcome that I know is gonna happen at the end of this flashback and just... ;A;

Here are my heartstrings, see how you've pulled them. I liked the backstory here, all of Romano's insecurity. I'm curious to see how it'll morph into his homophobia. I hope the Netherlands' part isn't entwined with that... I really enjoyed how you had him interacting with Romano here. A lot. <3

Spain, you are a terrible parent. (Don't tell rebellious teenagery children that you expect everything to be CLEAN when you get back. they don't like it.)
...but that's okay, because I'm not reading this for parent-child happy family interaction.

Well, glad I was wrong. |3 Neth shouldn't have to be le pedo..
And this is SO ADORABLE. ಡuಡ It's been a while since I've sen Spamano that was IN CHARACTER. So I'll write a review well-worth an awesome story like this! *cracks knuckles*
For most cases, they make Roma a mega tsun-tsun character type, all 'ti amo' and affection; but I love the way you're slowly willing his feelings into a state of affection in a way that's actually believable. :3
As for Spagna, usually fandom writers make him an idiotic lovestruck fool. But the thing is, in canon, HE'S SPANISH. And from the Spanish people I know, Spain is Spanish even for a Spanish person. In a good way. Does that make sense? Spanish people are passionate, pacifistic, and have many other Spanish qualities you've captured~! Pretty much, you've put life into him.
I love your Spamano. Completely. It brings out that canon in the series~! :D I wanna see more of how Homophobic!Roma came to be, so update whenever you can! (・ω ・)

to the dark scar on the man’s forehead the first thing I thought was "it's harry potter!" lol sorry
Oh dear I have a feeling Netherlands might have something to do with his homophobia. The whole part with Romanito thinking he was gonna leave was so cute. I actually cried >_>. Thanks for updating!

T_T I give up on this part. I’ve edited and rewritten everything so many times, but it just doesn’t read the way I want it to. I’m sorry. I hope it’s not terrible and doesn’t put anyone to sleep. OTL Also… I feel like it’s necessary to say that Netherlands is not going to rape Romano or anything >_<;; He definitely plays a part in causing Romano to develop homophobia, but there’s no bad-touching. Not in this fic, at least.
PresentWhen Romano woke up he was momentarily confused as to where he was. Somehow he had gotten tucked into a bed, and-Romano pushed back the blankets to see what he was wearing-changed into pajamas, as well. Then the memory of the previous night crept into his mind, and Romano realized he was in the hotel that he had reserved a room with Spain in

It seemed to assault him everywhere he went, though. Sometimes it was a gay couple on the street, and other times it was an intimate exchange between two male nations. Seeing such things flustered Romano and made him extremely uncomfortable. But the worst was when he’d find himself thinking and feeling strange things. Then his stomach would turn with disgust and his body would chill with fear because he’d think, just for a moment, that it might mean he was gay. But he wasn’t. He couldn’t be.
Veneziano had said once that Romano was a ‘homophobe’. That was fine. He was terrified of homosexuality. It wasn’t right. It was like a disease waiting for the slightest instance of weakness so that it could infect a person and destroy him. Romano knew how the feelings snuck up on somebody. Too many times he had felt his heart race and his body burn from a touch, a suggestion, a dream. Even now he had pictured Spain examining his body, and his mind had tried to make him react with sexual arousal. It was wrong. Romano was not one

Romano slipped out of bed and padded across the carpet to Spain’s bedside. He looked so incredibly peaceful at the moment. Romano was tempted to reach out and run the back of his hand along Spain’s cheek. But there was that sick, unnatural kind of compulsion again, and Romano tried to forget he had considered it as he shook Spain awake

So Romano wanted a lover.
Spain’s heart twisted in his chest. He wondered if Romano had someone specific in mind. He wondered if he’d be able to control his jealousy if it wasn’t him.
He didn’t think his love for Romano was much of a secret anymore. France had found out years ago, and Prussia often said that Spain was painfully obvious about it, so Spain could only imagine that a lot of other nations had caught on, as well.
Nobody made Spain happier than Romano, and he knew that he could make Romano happy, too. He loved him. He adored him. He knew his Romano like he knew the taste of a freshly picked tomato. Spain knew him better than anyone. He knew how to handle Romano’s anger, how to comfort him when he was sad, how to get him to smile and laugh, and how to make him open up. He knew that past Romano’s tough outer defenses there was a very soft and kind-hearted young man. Someone who wanted to make others happy and who was fiercely protective of those he loved, but someone who struggled with his flaws and insecurities
