Spain/Romano Homophobia

As a result of being sexually repressed psychologically and religion, Romano resorts to homophobia as a defense mechanism against any feelings he harbors for Spain and any advances Spain does in turn. The key part I want though is subtlety on their feelings for each other and a relatively slow progression of Romano coming to terms with accepting himself for who he is. I really don't want this to be the generic fic where one kiss or whatever from Spain magically fixes all of Romano's problems. This process needs to be slow, tough, and hopefully satisfactory for both them in the end.
Bonus: Putting Romano's other insecurities and flaws into the mix would be wonderful. Also the use of country names.

This part struck me really hard. "Romano couldn’t understand how so many people led guiltless lives. He sinned and made mistakes every single day, which led to constant guilt and disappointment. Was he truly so much worse than everybody else?" I might be being a little too forward but I just want to explain my deep appreciation, anon... I had thoughts like this all the time when I suffered from depression as a young and extremely religious teen. Fear of my sexuality played a big part in it. So reading this was like reading from my little-self's diary. I was deeply moved by Romano's inner-dialogue as well as Spain's patient love. Thank you very much...and I need a tissue heh.
Oh god this part just made want to cry and give Romano a big hug. I love the way you addressed all of his insecurities and that you made religion play a big part in it and just his inner dialogue in general is just so heartbreaking but exactly how it should be done. I don't even know what to say since if I started quoting the best lines I would quote everything and just say how much I absolutely adore it. Just ♥♥♥.
And oh my god Spain. His devotion and adoration of Romano is just so him. I'm also like that he's aware of Romano's homophobia too.
I'm really relieved and happy that you are not gonna have anything really bad happen to Romano as a child or I don't think I would be able to read this anymore orz. As for CAFE I don't mind you adding them in and I'm gonna let you decide who's paired up with who since it really doesn't matter to me. :)

This is without a doubt one of my fav fics on the meme, and I'm not even much of a spain/n.italy fan. But your Romano makes me want to cry a little bit for him, and me, and everyone else who doesn't feel completely adequate, religious reasons or not. And your Antonio is so perfect, I can't even handle it. Go anon go! <3

This is one of the few serious Spamano fics in the website that is so wonderfully written, and yet easy to understand; drenched with a lot of emotion. There should me more like this in FF.net and the kink meme (though, I strongly believe that the kink meme desperately needs more of these kind of fics)
This is so darn beautiful, this almost broke my heart and sorta made me want to cry (but didn't, because I am kinda cold to feel emotional :P)
But this was close to it.
Sigh, I adore Lovino, you made me have more adortion for one of my favorite characters (and pairing) in Hetalia.
I wish you so much luck in finishing this. It is just fantastic.

Spain walked over to Romano’s bed and sat down. He tugged at the covers until Romano was forced to relinquish a small amount of the blanket so that his face was revealed and privy to Spain’s gaze. Spain then gave a very sad smile that had Romano quickly strengthening his defenses even as his heart crumbled inside.
“Pleeease, Romano? It will be fun, I promise! And it would make me really happy if we could eat out together.”
Romano hoped his face didn’t reflect the pout he was giving on the inside. “It would make you happy to eat out with all of the other nations?” he asked. What was wrong with spending an evening with just Romano?
Spain’s smile turned more genuine and he shook his head. “Noo, it would make me really happy if I could eat out with you. I just trust America to know the best restaurants in New York City. And your brother will be going

Romano spent the rest of the day with Spain. Despite the fact that Spain was an endlessly cheerful, irritating bastard, his personality was a good match for Romano’s. He kept things positive while Romano kept things realistic. And after spending centuries in each other’s company, Romano and Spain knew everything about one another. Spain could tease Romano to his heart’s delight without ever pushing him too far, and Romano could throw whatever insult he wanted to at Spain without actually upsetting him. Unfortunately for Romano, Germany was standing outside of the restaurant when they arrived. His posture was stiff, as usual, and his expression very imposing, as usual. It was unbelievable how Veneziano’s face lit up at the sight of him.
“Germany!” he called out, waving. Veneziano broke into a run and threw his arms out as Germany appeared to brace himself for a hug. Then at the last moment Veneziano cried, “Ah!” and veered to the right, letting his arms fall awkwardly back to his sides. He turned around and gave his brother a very forced smile before facing Germany and saying something Romano couldn’t hear.
Romano watched the entire exchange with confusion. What the fuck was that all about? Why was Veneziano so weirdThere was a terrible screeching sound then, and the four nations spun around and watched a very sleek red convertible slide to a stop by the sidewalk in the most frightening display of parallel parking any of them had ever seen. America was at the wheel, looking calm and cheerful, while England who was by his

Which is to say, this was nice, anon. And I'm kinda scared for the rest of the scene. But also some drama needs to happen before the happy ending, right? Still, I can't help but feel bad for everybody involved.
Also, Veneziano showing restraint because he knows his brother is there... I think it might be the first time I see it and it's nice and very sweet of him, the poor thing<3

I might be being a little too forward but I just want to explain my deep appreciation, anon... I had thoughts like this all the time when I suffered from depression as a young and extremely religious teen. Fear of my sexuality played a big part in it.
