America did not do subtle. America was a land of dramatic landscaping: towering mountains; endless, rolling grasslands; Grand Canyons; that weird southern desert of his that looked like a cartoon really....America had grown up in such surroundings that had done nothing to teach him about subtlety. His people were not subtle either. They sought the heights and the lights, the bright and the brilliant and the blazing. They built cities that trumpeted their presence, reached for the sky and scraped it with glass towers and winged airships. His people were not harmonious, not delicate, defying nature, their rulers, and even each other in frantic chase of rose-colored dreams - racing each other in the pursuit of happiness. And for both good and ill - in spite of it, perhaps - America loved them, _was_ them ( ... )

It had been a particularly bad session. America was getting a lot of flak - the situation in the Middle East, the environment, the financial mess. England had impressed even France and Germany with his extended and inspired litany of America's faults, including his taste in food and his barbarous habits, what could be done to correct them, and why America was failing to correct his failures. It wasn't exactly unwarranted, and Alfred's bored dismissal of England's advice only prompted further shouting - but as Matthew's eyes darted around the room, looking for something to distract him (he hated confrontation like this, especially between two Nations he loved) his blue eyes by accident more than anything fell upon the pair that mirrored his own in shape and color - and found a flash of real hurt in them. He sat up in surprise, staring at his brother's face ( ... )

In the end, Matthew decided that the stakes were too high to take chances with; he'd imported some of Arthur's favorite British-brewed ales, even went to the trouble of making sure they weren't chilled like his Molsons were (the rest of the guests did not _have_ to be drunk, like Arthur had to be, and so they could damn well drink Matthew's beer) and at the warmer temperature that Arthur preferred ( ... )

He lured Francis away, just a little distance, by volunteering that he might have a bottle of red wine. "Canadian vintage," he added, in what might have been an apology or may have been just a piece of information. Francis made appropriate sounds of encouragement and didn't say a word about the superiority of his vineyards, and Matthew smiled at him for it as he poured the red ( ... )
