Exactly! I don't mind people writing about rape so long as they take the subject seriously and give the appropriate trigger warnings. But these morons treat it like it's a fucking joke, and it drives me crazy. Do these people have no functioning brain whatsoever?

This is something rampant in a lot of fandoms that seriously needs to stop. It tends to bug me in this one more than anywhere else, though. tbh I'm kind of bothered by rapefic in this fandom at all (though I'm not calling for it to stop being written; obviously that'll never happen and it is a valid kink when fictional) because I really don't like the implications behind the idea of the personification of any nation being a rapist. Let alone all of the stupid throwing it around that people do like you describe. Urgh.

I haven't really seen it to this degree in any other fandom; sure, in every fandom there's a couple dumbasses who think rape = love, but they don't really make it a defining character trait the way certain people in this fandom do. Yeah, there's pretty much no point in being the kink police. That has MASSIVE unfortunate implications, considering these are personifications of countries. I seriously would like to hear how French and Russian Hetalia fans feel about their country being portrayed as a rapist so often.

It's something I've seen in a lot of fandoms, both ones I was actually in and ones I just observed. It's usually younger teens doing this, which almost makes it sadder.

Yeah, it's one thing when it's just fic for the sake of the kink, but when the fandom starts seriously thinking of certain characters as rapists, it makes me really uncomfortable. I think I'd mind less if there was less fanon re; France and Russia and other characters being rapists, that stupid "invasion = rape" headcanon didn't exist, etc.

Yep, it seems people are indoctrinated into rape culture rather young.

I actually saw a post on the Hetalia headcanon Tumblr with the headcanon that France hates people (in-universe) jokingly or non-jokingly referring to him as a rapist; he's horrified and saddened that anyone could think him capable of doing something like that to anyone. That has now become my headcanon. Ugh, don't even get me started on "invasion = rape".

I agree. It's a valid kink, like any other kink, but oftentimes people...really don't treat it that way at all. Like you said, when they're throwing it around as a joke, or making it like being a rapist is a part of a character's core personality, it's ridiculous and needs to stop.

And now I'm thinking of something that showed up on Tumblr just a few hours ago... I was, however, quite happy to see it showing up on my dash because someone I follow was calling out someone else for using the word rape like this.

Thank you for this rant. I would actually enjoy - if that's the right word? - a fic where subjects like rape are handled responsibly, but I don't really have enough faith that I'll find one of those to read any rape!fic. And comments like the one you quoted... I don't know if that or the rape is love trope piss me off more, I really don't.

That's wonderful! People are learning, slowly but surely.

No problem; this was mostly just brought on by my seeing too many comments of this nature on YouTube today and needing somewhere to vent before I exploded on some hapless bystander. Eh, enjoy probably isn't the best word, but I know what you mean. There might have been a couple, but I can't for the life of me remember the titles. That wasn't technically a direct quote, but the meaning was similar. Also, the person who asked why anyone would watch Hetalia other than for rape said that in response to people calling him/her out about being excited over the thought of Prussia raping Hungary. (It was the scene where he finds out for sure that Hungary is a girl.)

Ugh, that person, I want to fucking kill them >.<;. I really do. How can anybody be that disgusting and shallow?

My thoughts exactly. And then the person proceeded to go on about how we were all being too "sensitive".

I agree completely. I have the feeling that lots of the people who throw the word and these jokes around are really young and don't understand how serious and horrible rape really is. Anime fandoms in particular are full of art, fics, doujinshi etc. that portray rape as something romantic or funny. If most of the smut one is exposed to is like that, I guess it's easy to get a warped mentality about it.

And I have no words for how much I loathe the fandom's portrayal of Russia and France as rapists. I particularly hate stories in which Prussia is East Germany, locked in Russia's basement and raped all day long.

Even if they are young, though, somebody really needs to tell them that this way of thinking is wrong and hurtful. (It's a shame this generation is being raised to not be able to handle a bit of constructive criticism. A couple of the people I mentioned flipped out when someone called them on their bullshit.) Yeah, what's up with that? I know Western animation fandoms, video game fandoms, etc. don't have a lot of rape in them, so why do anime fandoms?

Neither do I. Ohhh, I hate Prussia/Russia purely because of how many fics there are of this pairing with that scenario. I'm sure there are plenty of lovely fics with them too, but the bad ones have turned me off from the pairing pretty much entirely. I also hate when people decide to portray the invasion of, say, Poland as gang rape. Makes me want to bang my head against a wall.

Yeah, I agree completely. The flippant attitude some people have when they're called out on their insensitive behaviour is really astonishing. Is it really that difficult to do a bit of self-reflection and realise when you're wrong and need to apologize?

I've read a few good stories with that pairing, but the vast majority I've seen involve either rape and/or some form of Stockholm syndrome, and that just isn't my cup of tea, no matter how well written it is. And yeah, I loathe the trope that invasion is rape. There was an interesting rant about that in fanficrants recently that brought up some good points about how messed up it is.

Apparently, it is. Too many parents are raising their children to believe that they are precious widdle snowflakes and that everyone who criticizes them is wrong.

Hm, any recommendations? I hate disliking a pairing unless I don't like the chemistry between the characters or I can't stand one or both of them.
