Anyone considering a move to Dreamwidth? anonymous June 4 2013, 19:10:38 UTC
Since the anonmeme has just moved from LJ to DW, I was thinking about maybe the kink meme moving too? It's easy to import all posts over there, so we wouldn't be losing any content by doing so, and then we wouldn't have to deal with LJ problems anymore ( ... )

I would be okay with it, but at the same time I'm scared that a move would kill even the little activity that we have left here. But you're definitely right about LJ dying, so I don't know if we have anything to lose at this point.

OP

I understand your concerns. I don't think there is anyone who can access LJ but not DW, so I don't think there should be much difficulty with people quitting the kink meme if we move.

I actually believe there will be more activity if we move. Thanks for commenting.

I'd definitely like if the kink meme could move too!

I think the move of the anon meme to DW proved that it won't completely kill activity if things move here.

At this point, I'm in favor of moving. Killing off what activity we have is a concern, but with the meme being slower every round, that seems to be more-or-less happening anyway.

A lot of people left the meme when lj started doing strange things, too, so it's very possible that at least some of them would return if we moved. As it is, I'm getting very tired of lj's increasing instability, and upgrades that make it less and less usable each time.

So, here's a vote for moving.

Might I also suggest that if we do move, there be a discussion post on the meme itself? That might help with increasing comments and the like, if people had a place to discuss things that was a lot more easily accessible from the main meme.

I'm all for moving to dreamwidth. It's way more accessible, faster and the layout is easier on the eyes. I've also seen a lot of kinkmemes moving over there too.

Seeing how the anonmeme is doing on DW makes me feel this would be a good move for the kinkmeme as well. While the fact the meme's all anoned meant none of the comments got eaten in the last outrage, it'd be awful if something did happen to them...I don't even want to think about it.

Put me down for a move!

I think the benefits of moving (such as not having the issue of comments not showing up unless you're logged in, less downtime, less difficulty when posting anon - for some people the option does not display at all - etc etc) would outweigh any potential drawbacks.

The thing I worry about is what that would do to everyone's bookmarks and indexes. I'm not sure what the best way to handle that is.

Hmm, you bring up a good point. The way I figure it, since the LJ meme won't disappear, people can still access their bookmarked fics. I would personally change my bookmarks from the LJ links to the new DW links, but I understand some people may find this tedious.

Most of the indexes are out of date anyway, so perhaps after the move some people can work on making new indexes? I'm not sure what to do about them.

Just remember that the LJ meme will not disappear when and if the move happens.

I'm in favour of moving as quickly as possible. The meme is dying and I don't think we're attracting any new blood with LJ being the way it is.

Now would be a suitable time anyway since part 25 is just about to start. The mod could lock things up, import what needs to be imported and then open part 25 on Dreamwidth.

I have just notified the mod of this thread and asked to have a more official post on the main page so more people can comment.

I also asked to put a hold on opening Part 25 until the decision has been made.

Thanks to all who have commented so far. It's nice to see so many people agree with me!

I didn't get any messages, though, which is a little concerning

Not OP. I think it's another of livejournal's lovely glitches. Sometimes I get messages and sometimes I don't.

All the more reason to move to DW.

I have no problem porting this comm over if that is how anons want to do it. The discussion post used to be part of the kink meme, but back in 2011 when this one started, there were a lot of issues with that. That was why we moved here.

If you guys would rather reincorporate it back into the meme, I don't have a problem with that either. It's obviously a quieter time in the fandom.

I should have just replied to you -- unless notifs are misbehaving again..!

(Pretty much everywhere I posted, I just sent people back here to talk, so that it doesn't get scattered around and hard to keep track of.)
