Movie Review: Transformers

The animated version of the Transformers has been all that there was to hold us over, aside from the various cartoons. The Headmasters never really caught my fancy, and Beast Machines were ok, but I always liked the first animated series best, with the movie as the penultimate.

The newest movie easily tops the old, animated one.

Bumblebee was a newer version of a classic car, when he changed from the old "PoS", though before that he still wasn't a GM vehicle... he was a Chevy Camero. :)

Tops the old one..?

Hey, I LOVED the new movie (first and last time I'll say this of a Michael Bay movie, and it's one time too many), but the old animated movie was one of those pop icons that helped define a generation. Very few movies leave a cultural mark like the old one did.

Namely, in traumatizing a whole generation of kids by seeing their heroes getting genocideziededed on the screen.

The new movie's very good. The old movie is untouchable.

Hmm, yes, the old movie is untouchable... But I enjoyed the new movie a lot better than the old one. It shows a certain nobility to sacrifice yourself (at the very least, prepared to do so) for a race you consider a young, inexperienced and perhaps not always deserving one.

And from what I've read and heard, there's at least a few sequels in the wings. Perhaps they will touch more upon the theme from the original movie.

This may come off as odd, but I think in some ways I was too young to be interested in the first Transformers series when it first came out. I don't have anything against it, because I don't know enough about it to, and I wouldn't be fundamentally averse to checking it out someday, but it'd have to be for the dialogue and plotline, which I only developped an interest in later on. I got into Transformers through Beast Wars back when it was on when I used to be in high school, and it's probably a superficial reason, but I think I gave it more of a chance because I find animals very, very interesting, whereas I find vehicles very, very boring. :)
