So, as some of you may know I've had some troubles with whistlepigs invading my garden. A whistle pig, you say? Yes! Did you know that a groundhog and a woodchuck are in fact the same animal? I haven't heard them called "whistlepigs" in a long time. We used to live near a man-made lake and regularly drove over the road on top of the earth dam, where there was a large field on the dry side heavily populated by whistlepigs. When we drove over, sometimes we would hang out the window and whistle, and they'd all pop their heads up. I don't know whether that behavior is why they're called whistlepigs or not.

huh, I thought that the term was a southern term. Do you think if I stand in the garden and whistle they'll all follow me to a nice park where they can all live happily ever after?

Well, the area where I grew up is the northernmost tip of Appalachia, so maybe it's an Appalachian term.
