The GM at my Papa John's has just suggested that I start training to become an assistant manager instead of a delivery driver. I haven't given an answer yet. I think I should weigh the negatives against the positives first

Do they have health benefits for managers? Retirement funds? Paid vacation? Those can offset the issues of stress and less cash flow. Your salary would also be a given, meaning you no longer have to worry about the quanity of tips (though I don't think you do).
The retirement fund is a pretty good deal, if they have it. Even if you don't stay long, the money is set aside until you either a.) retire, or b.) make an early withdrawal. I'm closed out two retirement funds from different places in my days and it's nice to get a quick shot of cash, though you do pay hefty fees and tax penalties for such a thing.
However, you should also consider how being a manager would affect your creative life. Would you be more or less able to do the things that are really important to you? And if you have to take a break for a while and make good on some health insurance, would it be worth it.
Oh, and a management position is a pretty good thing if you wanted to move to some other kind of food-service management job or retail situation.

I never really gave the option serious consideration. As you may notice, all my positives are actually negatives. I could have done a better job at making my sarcasm apparent, I suppose.
Anyway, you're right about the way management can affect creativity. Andrew noticed a huge change in my personality during the time I was managing at the Aquarium & Plant Company.
Though retirement and benifits are nice, I think a managerial position would be detrimental to your creative life. I think being a manager would be a drag on your time, since many companies try to suck up as much time from their salaried employees as possible. Also, you would have to be more of a dick and poeple would hate you. Some of your underlings may even want to kill you, or burn your house down. As a matter of fact, I'm feeling hot under the collar already. I think I'm going to become a delivery driver for your store so that I can resist your authority, you fucker.
