trends sell uniqueness. ordinary people dress up to feel special. even if they feel it inside, or rather, if others reflect the specialness they want to feel, they still seem ordinary to others. in a world full of passionate artists: designers, jewelrymakers, painters, poets, and songwriters, the majority of whom create privately (never sharing ( Read more... )

i think it is a good rant, but not taken from sufficient points of view. you feel awaken spiritually by your new method of living and wish to share your new found wisdom with others. that i can appreciate. but you fail to see, or make the counter arguement that to some people, bathing more than often, dying their hair, and caring about their appearance is not a means of conforming, not does it take from their self-identity, for if it is done simply in the context of doing it for the self, not for the improvement of self-image, than its purpose is to reflect outside the values and morals eminanting from inside. just because i bleach my hair does not mean im searching to be special by conforming. it means that i want to present myself in a way that enriches me inside. if i feel that i can put my best self forward, and by doing so i am making a statement about personal self-respect, and how i care for my body, than i dont see how, because it is not an act done in consideration of conformity, it can be seen as so. if you are a ( ... )

ah, its wonderful that you bring these things up. you're right, i was thinking about hair girls, and those who do things like dye their hair because it is a trend and to admittedly conform. i wonder if you consider though, that the most intense conformity is blind, people don't know that they're sell-outs because our culture tells them they're not (by them i just exclude myself to make things simpler, though i don't presume to exclude myself from all of the generalizations i make). yes, i suppose you do know that because you admit the unconscious level of it. i'd love to chat so i'll give you a call tomorrow. i'll be busy writing a paper during the day that im supposed to be doing now (but i cant because i have food poisoning. well, im writing my ta to tell her that i do so i dont have to stay up till its due at 9:30 tomorrow morning). tomorrow we'll see about the weekend. its good to read from you...

note that people with piercings and flourescent hair and other un-conventional surface accessories are not conforming...using your body to express yourself in some ways really does come down to artistic expression. painting skin, manipulating fashion, and so on are all means of somatic expression... piercings therefore, are not a sign of conformity on many people, on the people i know. on the people at college 8 and kids who listen to bad radio tunes its not body art though (as far as im concerned at the moment, i know its a generalization)
