Lost and Found (Part 13a).
Peter rolled and tossed and stared up into the darkness. He couldn't sleep right then, his mind was a whirl of emotions. The evening spent with Scott, teaching him how to field cook and then with the other kids as they'd all sat around the fire and talked and teased and somehow he realized they all had managed to get something out of their exercise, despite all the whining and complaining. It had made the entire endeavor worth it in his opinion.
However, his mind kept going back to the conversation and the time spent with Scott. He was being stupid, he was pushing the boundaries, and he knew it. But he couldn't turn away from the teen. He just couldn't. Scott had become such a part of his life, and such a prt of what he needed, he couldn't just not be there for him or have him in his life.
Pushing himself up, he slid out of his sleeping bag and walked away from the camp. He slid through the trees and made his way through the trees, made his way out to a small clearing with a huge boulder where he could curl up and enjoy the world around him since he couldn't sleep with his mind a whirl of thoughts.
Scott saw him go, which was probably a testament to how affixed he was on Peter Scarbrow. The evening with him had been wonderful, and once again the teen had realized how much the man had gotten to him...under his skin. So when he saw Peter move in the dieing light of the fire, he followed, carefully and silently. Not that he was any great stalker of the night.
Peter grinned, hearing the steps coming up behind him. He knew who he hoped they belonged to, but was more sure that it was Hannah than Scott. With that thought, he slid into the trees and waited for whoever it was to pass, blinking in surprise when he saw Scott. With as loud as the teen was being, it took nothing at all to slip in behind him as quietly as he could.
"Shouldn't you be back at camp?" he demanded teasingly in Scott's ear when he caught up to the boy.
"Christ!" he hissed, jumping in surprise. "Don't do that!" He turned to face Peter, face still registering his startlement.
Peter smiled at Scott's reaction. "Your reaction made it worth it. So, what're you doing out here, Scott?"
"I could ask you the same. But if you must know, I'm...following you," he added a bit sheepishly after a moment
"You're following me?" That caused Peter to smile broadly. No, he shouldn't be happy about that, but somewhere inside, his heart skipped a beat to think that Scott would even want to follow him!
"Yeah... I saw you leave and wondered... wondered if something was wrong," he stuttered lamely.
"I just wanted some down time," he answered, motioning down the path toward his destination. "You wanna join me?"
"Sure." Scott offered up a tentative smile. "Assuming Hannah doesn't wake up and find us both missing and gets pissed."
"She knows how I wander off. Hopefully she'll assume you're with me. If not, she'll just rouse the entire group and go hunting for us," he retorted, shoving his hands into his pockets as they wandered down the rest of the path and came out into a small clearing overlooking the other mountains. It was barely seen in the light of the moon, but there was a large boulder there that they could sit on as they chatted and it was there that Peter settled in.
"Which," the teen commented dryly as he hoisted himself up next to him, "is so much better." His gaze wandered out over the nighttime landscape, never quite settling on any specific spot.
"You aught to see the sunset from up here...and the sunrise for that matter. It's breathtaking. And in winter? With all the snow and the light reflecting off the white? I can't even explain it," he offered, glancing away, anywhere but at Scott.
"We could come back up here in winter," Scott noted after several moments, in a very tentative tone.
Peter glanced over at Scott to see if he was joking or not. A wan smiled lit his face. "It's awfully damned cold, you know..."
"I'm sure we can figure out a way to keep ourselves warm." And at the words, Scott was definitely feeling that. "Wow, that sounded..." Really, really wrong.
"Yeah, there's always lots of wood for fire and long johns and heavy sleeping bags..." Peter grinned over at Scott. "And body heat..." Shit, stop flirting with the students, Peter! He swallowed hard, wondering what the hell he was doing.
It was out before he could stop it. "Would you keep me warm, then?" Dangerous territory, Scott. This is going into *very* dangerous territory.
Oh, God, Peter, step the fuck off! he thought to himself even as his mouth betrayed him and he asked, "That depends on if you'd want me to..."
"Yeah," he said very softly after several long moments.
"Scott," he whispered, his gaze searching that of the young man's. He wanted to lean in and kiss him, but was terrified to at the same time. If a move like that was to be made, it would have to be made by Scott...because he would _not_ take advantage of him that way!
"What? You think I haven't thought about this? Believe me, it's kept me awake more nights than this. Ever since we...we kissed," he added softly You're digging yourself a grave, Barringer. Digging yourself a fucking grave. But whatever his mind might be saying, Scott ignored as he leaned in, closer and closer until his lips barely touched Peter Scarbrow's.
Peter couldn't help it, his defenses were completely gone at this point. He knew he should pull away, he knew he shouldn't allow things to go any further than. But his body betrayed him. Lifting his hand up, he lightly caressed Scott's cheek as he returned the kiss softly. His brain was telling him no, but he couldn't stop it, not now.
He braced one hand on Peter's chest as they kissed, the simple act leaving Scott utterly breathless.
Slowly, Peter pulled back, a gentle smile lighting his face. "You're not the only one who's been losing sleep..."
"I figured," he said softly. "Isn't this the part where you lecture me about not knowing anything... Or kissing a superior..." he teased.
"Would it matter if I did at this point?" Peter smiled weakly at that, knowing the truth before Scott said it.
"No," he breathed.
Peter smiled weakly and nuzzled Scott's cheek, wanting to suddenly forget the fact that Scott was only sixteen and in his charge. "I don't know what I'm going to do," he admitted softly.
"You think I do? I've never been gay before," he said, grinning a bit in the darkness. "Or had feelings for someone who is like this."
"We're treading on dangerous ground...very dangerous ground. Especially considering some of the other things going on. I uhm...I worry that you feel something for me because I'm the one who's been helping you, getting you to open up and feel again..." Peter admitted softly, finally saying at least some of the doubts and questions going through his mind.
"Hey." There was a soft annoyance to the one word, telling of Scott's displeasure with that assumption. "I may be new to it, but I know what it is.... What I'm doing."
He met Scott's gaze as steadily as he could in the semi-darkness. He knew Scott meant what he said right then in that moment. But, when he got older and looked on things in a different light, would he still feel the same? "Even though you've been fighting it like mad up until now?" he asked softly, his mouth quirking up crookedly on one side.
"Yeah, well... You know the saying about denial," he answered. "It's not just a river in Egypt."
Peter laughed and shook his head. "It's a train wreck...you and I...even considering it is insane!"
The teenager's chin lifted slightly in defiance. "Are you telling me to step off, then?"
"Did I say that?" he demanded, suddenly not wanting to have Scott turn way from him. It had been a very long time since he'd felt this way about anyone. It had been a very long time since he'd wanted and needed someone so desperately in his life as he felt he needed Scott.
"No," he admitted, pose relaxing.
His hand came up to almost hesitantly brush against Scott's cheek. "I should run as far and as fast as I can to get away from this...But I can't. I can't do that to you..."
"I'd tackle your ass if you even tried it," came the response through the darkness as he shifted to lean into the touch.
And that easily, it was done. He'd given in. God, what was he doing? Peter knew it was insane. It set a slight knot of fear into the pit of his stomach. He wouldn't turn away now...too many things depended upon this, he couldn't fail Scott. Not now. Leaning in, it was his turn to kiss Scott first, the first time he'd ever been the one to initiate anything that could be considered inappropriate and at that moment in time, he didn't care.
He answered the kiss, oddly comforted by the firm lines of Peter's body. This was no soft, many-curved Elaine trying to dominate him, but something else. Something where they both gave and received.
Peter reached out, wrapping his arms around Scott and pulled him close. He let the kiss deepen, skimming his tongue lightly along his lips. A soft moan escaped Peter and he couldn't believe they were there, kissing and admitting how they felt for one another.
"I'm really starting to be glad I followed you," Scott murmured when they finally pulled apart, both breathless.
"You're horrible!" Peter laughed breathlessly, glancing away from the young man who had so quickly taken a part of his heart.
Scott laughed and shoved Peter lightly. "And you love it," he replied smartly.
The counselor shook his head and chuckled before admitting softly. "Yeah...yeah I guess I do."
He left his hand where it rested, a small smile on his lips. He didn't really see any reason to speak after that, as they sat together and stared out at the night. The first hurtle had been jumped successfully. Scott had a feeling the following ones wouldn't be so easy.
