in general i really like the movie. it was well filmed. ddl was FANTASTIC. but i thought that the story and characters were extremely underdeveloped. why did daniel hate eli so much? were eli and paul actually different people? or did eli just give him a fake name? why did daniel have such animosity towards his son? just b/c he was deaf?

anyway...yeah i just got confused a lot. i definitely like no country for old men better.

I've only seen it once but I'm pretty positive there were two actual brothers, one of which sold the information to Daniel and skipped town. I appreciated the movie as a story mostly about Daniel--his character was bizarre and cruel and yet... fascinating in his drive and power. His relationship with his son just couldn't take the consequences of the accident, and I think Daniel justified the animosity towards his son because he viewed deafness as a weakness. Plus a big part of Daniel's job is speaking and selling his image, which his son was obviously being groomed for and could no longer do. Weakness is obviously a big issue throughout for Daniel, strong enough to disown his son or to murder Eli for publicly embarrassing him. Be it deafness that can be worked past with love and learning sign language or embarrassment that can be forgotten with forgiveness and humility--Daniel has none of these traits. Plus he's just a plain old cantankerous bastard.
