Tools For Save-Whores

- Updated listings for everything.

Want to save your favorite fics to your computer's hard drive so you can read it on the go or just to know you have it? Here's what you need and it's all FREE!

Mac users, there's Save-Whore tools out there for you too! You just might need a little Wine.

If you find yourself coveting a downloader that doesn't support your favorite format then just get Calibre! Example: Just drop the FicSavers.Com zip into the program and it'll allow you to convert the fic into a single file.Input Formats: CBZ, CBR, CBC, CHM, EPUB, FB2, HTML, HTMLZ, LIT, LRF, MOBI, ODT, PDF, PRC, PDB, PML, RB, RTF, SNB, TCR, TXT, TXTZ
Output Formats: EPUB, FB2, OEB, LIT, LRF, MOBI, HTMLZ, PDB, PML, RB, PDF, RTF, SNB, TCR, TXT, TXTZ

1: Ask yourself what your desired format is.
Personally, I like HTML. I always have my web browser (Opera) open when my computer is on so it just makes sense to leave a tab open for reading pleasure. With DOC, RFT, and TXT I happen to lean on the keyboard and text gets erased or something like that, I've no luck there. Plus, every browser I've seen has a save option ([ctrl]+[S]) which will allow you to save the page as HTML, TXT, and sometimes MHT.

2: Ask yourself what sites you plan to save from most often and whether or not that site uses efiction script.
I bring up efiction because a lot of sites (HPFandom.Net, TheHexFiles.Net, TheSilverSnitch.Net) use this script. The thing about efiction is that there is a little printer
(sometimes it is just worded as 'print story') that will open the entire story to printer friendly HTML; you can just save that to your computer if you want HTML. Plus, a lot of efiction sites are supported by one or more of the programs I am listing.

Fics are saved as all chapters to one page and the finished product is zipped up for downloading. This can be used directly from your ereader or i-product. [iPod/iPhone Stanza Users]

Fanfiction Updater

An application that saves in HTML with DeFFnetizer templates and is a great way to keep track of WIPs.
- This program has just gotten some major retouching done. Carl has released 9 versions in the last 2-3 days, each adding up to something a little more functional. He's added multiple ways to save your output fic, not as customizable as Graffer but still in the format I'm accustomed to: one folder labeled as Title - Author, in which I can quickly edit to Title -Author-. He's also updated the import option (WHICH IS HEAVENLY) so you can save a bunch of links from one of the archives in a .txt. I did one of all 153 of Lomonaaeren's fics and it was perfect! With FireFox add-ons Copy Link or Link Copier you can easily copy the links from a page for a .txt, just remove all the links that are not to the actual fics.
- Because of this, it's just beaten Graffer's shiny ass in productivity in my book. Now if only it did some of my more favorite sites. (TheHexFiles) ^_^ Saints preserve us! My prayers are heard!

Update: There has been some major changes to the program. First, there are now two modes for the controls: a normal mode and an advanced mode. So people who were a bit overwhelmed never fear, it's much easier to understand now. Adding author links is now supported, so you can add one of your favorite author's (Lomonaaeren's) fics with just their profile link or even add your favorites with your profile link! Though it's not supported for all sites. And the last major change is the introduction of Calibre integration. However, you won't actually want to convert more than 5 fics at a time.

FlagFic.com
FLAG, or Fanfiction Lightweight Automated Grabber, is another program that doesn't need to be downloaded. You can also have the site send the downloaded/converted fic to your e-mail address which would be handy for Kindle users and if you're on a public computer. I would say that the program downloads and converts faster than FicSavers but it isn't customizable whatsoever. I'm not much of a fan yet but it looks like the program is still fairly new.

Graffer
Seems to be a dead downloader. Instead of fixing the problems with FF.Net they let the downloader and website die out. You can still find old versions of Graffer by Googling and DarkLordPotter.Net has a FF.Net fix.

A more rare find. I haven't been able to get version 1.1.2 to work though, I just get this DOS window and nothing more. I did get version 1.1.1 to work. So far I like it, it gets the FA.ORG fics that FicSavers.Com can't get. This does not use DeFFnetizer templates. There's a guide on the template page that you can use to make your own. Another program that can watch your WIPs.

I prefer the old versions to the new version, more places to download from. If you read fanfiction frequently this is a MUST HAVE along with a FicSavers account. (<-- Old opinion.) You can still get the old versions if you know how to change the url just right. The ZIP version is also a portable version that you can just unzip onto a flash drive and take anywhere. With my FicSavers account I used this program for FA.ORG and oneshots.

Raimond's Fanfiction Downloader [NEW]
The creator rewrote the FFD code and this is what he came up with. Only downloads from a few sites right now, more will probably come. No HTML support, which is why I'm not sporting this version yet. HTML is now supported. When you first load the program and edit the Config (configuration) you can either use Calibre (if you have it) or select to only download in HTML. - Also, Raimond has informed me that he plans to bring back the Fanfiction Alert and have it included in FFD [NEW]! I've really gotten into following WIPs lately and having a backup copy (just in case an author deletes it) so this has actually gotten me excited for future versions of FFD [NEW].
Update: There is a new experimental web-based version here: Webversion FanFictionDownloader
Format:
• HTML (Customizable with DeFFnetizer templates.)With the Calibre integration:

Raimond's Fanfiction Alert
The site is in German but the program also supported English. This is no longer working, I added it to the list because it was a neat find. It was just an alert program that let you know when a specific fic or work from an author was updated.
Format:
• HTML
• TXT

Sites:
• FanFiction.Net
Story Master
Another web-based downloader. I didn't care for this one. The one time I tried this downloader it had taken hours for the fic to be sent to my e-mail and I never saw results from trying to get Lomonaaeren's fics, I think I had killed it.
Format:
• EPUB
• HTML
• LIT
• MOBI
• PDF
• TXT

Alternate Reading Solutions
Want a low-CPU-sucking reader for your fics when you don't want to open your bowser? Well, I did. 'Specially since opening my browser means opening over 50 tabs that I can't bring myself to close. I just wanted something that I could use when I didn't want to open Opera, or even attempt to use FF or IE for fic reading. Here's my lucky findings!

yBook
Turns out this little gem is perfect for me since it also reads editable text, which I am prone to accidentally erasing. This little baby reads ePUB, HTML, RTF, and TXT. It's not a lot but just enough for me to like it. I'm using version 1 since even the creator admits that version 2 doesn't work correctly. It pretty much reformats HTML by removing things like bold/div/italic/table tags and links. But overall it's like reading in Opera's User Mode, which is exactly how I read fics.
Format:
• ePUB
• HTML
• RTF
• TXT
JMReader
Now this was an amazing find! It's pretty similar to yBook in how it looks. There's 2 modes (browsing and reading) and plenty of options. So if your fic collection is getting a little bulky you can zip or rar (which is even more compressed) your fics back up and save yourself a whole lot of space. Or just leave it zipped up as is if you get it from FicSavers.Com I find it to save me about over 60% more space when it's compressed. Amazing! - I now pretty much use this thing if the fic I'm reading looks alright in it, just in case my browser crashes (which it does a lot of).
Format:
• HTML
• RAR (rarred HTML and TXT)
• TXT
• ZIP (zipped HTML and TXT)
WebSiteZip Packer
This very cool program will allow you to save HTML fics into EXE programs for offline reading! Basically it takes the HTML files and adds a browser to them. It's not going to save you any KBs but it's still an awesome find. This will only work on fics that have an Index file or fics linked together, and on a single-file fic that is saved in it's own folder.
Format:
• HTML
Do you know of some similar software? Tell me about it! I really want to know!
Wanna share my list but don't want to deal with the coding tags?
Well, just copy and paste what's in the box!
