maybe brave the hell of Dell customer service? maybe they'll fix it for free or maybe there's something else you can try that they can suggest? *hugs*

for the record, the registry stuff can be accessed by:
start menu > run > regedit

maybe poke around there and find the startup folder? or go to
start menu > programs > startup
and delete the extra programs that start at reboots in the menu?

LOL, that just makes me think of when Rena was looking into buying a new computer, but refused to speak with a Dell representative.. So she had me on 4-way with some dude (maybe ..uhh.. fuck, what's his name? The guy who wasn't Skye. Danny?) and she insisted I try and get her a catalog. So she freaks out the second a human person picks up the phone and hangs up, 'cause of all the paranoia she's got. xD ( ... )

I wouldn't access the registry at this point. There's probably not much going on as far as that goes.

However, I always found out that sometimes not all startup items throw themselves in the startup folder. Conveniently, you either have to disable them individually in their preference settings, or you can access MSCONFIG and disable them that way. WinXP has MSCONFIG, whereas Win2000 did not. (There is a way around it, but anyway..)

Start > Run > MSCONFIG

There should be a Startup tab that you can click and disable certain executables from starting themselves up. I'm thinking that if the defrag was unable to run, that you possibly may have a bad hard drive. When was the last time you ran a virus scan?

I ran a virus scan two nights ago, and a spyware scan last night. Both of them said I was clean. ;_;

I did another defrag last night too (the one before that I didn't get to see the results of because MOMMY got to the comp first Sunday morning and wanted to play her GAMES. ~_~ So she gave me the "gist" of what it sayd).. But it said it completed successfully, but the drive was still 20% fragmented. It gave a list of the problem files, and they were mostly the big, over 1 gig ones, like the DVD rips of Pirates of the Caribbean I still haven't converted to a useable size, that kind of thing.

I wouldn't rule out a bad hard drive, either.. Kind of like how my first HD crashed 3 times and always pretended there was no A drive. ^^;;;;;; I thought this stuff was supposed to not happen when you got computers direct from the manufacturer? xD
