I purchased a hard-sided train case from etsy vintage recently. It arrived today and unfortunately it has a smokey/old smell to it. Which is sort of expected being that it is a vintage item. At first I thought it was just musty, but in walking by it a few times, I can definitely smell an underlining cigarette smell.

Here's a link to the case, if ( Read more... )

Agree with the vinegar, but you may also consider a product called Tuff Stuff first, which I use to clean assorted fabric things, including train cases which I resell. Don't go crazy, but spray the foam on, let it set for about 30 seconds, then wipe off with a damp sponge. Don't soak it, as it's attached with glue, but a light misting should be fine. If it smells like smoke then it likely has smoke residue, even if you can't see it, so wiping as much off as possible is a good idea before the deodorizing.

for this, i'm putting in my vote for fresh air/sunshine and spraying the inside with vodka. repeat as needed.

if the weather doesn't permit, activated charcoal works beautifully and is surprisingly inexpensive (we use it in the filter for the fish tank and we got a big jar of it for...i think $5ish at walmart?).

when my now-husband and i were moving in together in 2003, he was moving his things from a home where his parents smoked heavily inside and we had to do this for a LOT of stuff. we were able to salvage most of it, too.

good luck - if you find something that works, will you post again and let us know what you did? and givvus a picture of the beauty too? :)

I've heard that you can put kitty litter in the item and let it sit for awhile and then vacuum it all out. No idea if this works, but I was thinking of trying it on a vintage case that I picked up at a yard sale. It's never been used, but it just smells dreadfully OLD.

That case is super cute!

Baking soda -- sprinkle a lot of it it in the case, leave for 24 hours, then vacuum thoroughly. And if your climate allows, some fresh air and sunshine!
