Carpet Binding

Feb 18, 2014 15:22

Has anyone ever hand a chunk of carpet bound off to make an area rug?
Was it worth it? Was it a pain in the ass?

Just has my place recarpeted and a chunk of carpet was left over. We are moving and I was thinking of having the piece bound off instead of spending even more $$ on an area rug.

OR - good places for inexpensive LARGE area rugs (

I bought brown gaffer's tape and did it myself to make area rugs after we tore up carpet and put down hardwood floors. Not quite as nice as real, actual rugs, but functional, decent looking and nearly free.

Target.com and Overstock.com have large selections of area rugs at a huge range of prices.

Seconding Overstock.com. Read the reviews - there's a wide variety of quality. They also have pretty good, affordable rug pads. Love that $3 shipping!

I agree with calling.

Not sure what inexpensive is to you, but Menard's (a midwestern tool supply place) sells big carpets in the $300ish range.

We were told $1.20 per linear foot the place I called. So a 10x10 piece of carpet would be $48 to bind off if you already have the carpet piece. Then you need to buy a pad to go under it as well but that's not very expensive (it needs to be a carpet pad, not a rug pad).

Guy told us just that non skid rug stuff would be ok.
Might do it for the new place.

I've had good success with Overstock.com for rugs. They haven't arrived yet but I got a great deal on some rugs from rugsusa.com during a 70% off sale. If you end up going the new area rug route just sign up for both those companies to see when a sale hits, you should never have to pay full price for an area rug. If there aren't any reviews just google the rugs, someone else is bound to have a review of the same one on their site.

Don't know if you're in the US or not, but I've had good luck at Lowes of all places.
