I'm looking for some old school, cool, crisp bed sheets. The kind you used to love sliding into when you snuck into bed with your nana. The weather here is hot and humid, and there is no AC and the fans just aren't cutting it at night anymore ( Read more... )

The only way you will get that is if you either hang them out to dry, or starch them. I like to hang them out. Put them in the dryer to "a little wet" setting, and then hang them out for a little bit. They smell different too.

Oh man, I hope you get good responses because I'd love a set of sheets like that!

The only thing I've heard that fits your description are sheets from the Vermont Country Store. (Kind of like this: http://www.vermontcountrystore.com/store/jump/productDetail/Home/Bed_&_Bath/Sheets/Clothesline_Crisp_Sheet_Set/49249_ )

But I haven't tried them myself. Good luck!

Actually, while talking sheets, does anybody here have good tips for removing yellowing/darkening from pure cotton sheets and pillowcases that, er, might have needed more regular changing than they've had? Pillowcases are particularly bad for it, presumably due to one's sweaty hair. Even though they have been washed using whitener, they are still not so nice as they could be.

The sun does bleach linens so maybe hanging them out to dry? I understand, I have a pair of ticking striped flannel sheets are are looking kind of gross even though I KNOW they are clean.

Me, too. Sanforized 100% cotton -- old school but heavenly.

These days you can practically see through the fabric; the scrumptious ones had a thickness you tend only to find in some hospital-grade sheets lately.

I'd happily sleep every night on plain white sheets to be allowed that ahhhhh once more. Permanent Press and polyester "enrichment wrecked a marvelous experience.

Some things are even WORTH ironing for, manufacturers!

Buy cotton sheets and starch them.

I'm going to guess that the more thread count, the higher the chance of gaining that experience. Might be worth the investment. Like in good hotels, yes?
