A Non-traditional Door

Jun 29, 2015 12:41

My husband recently built a bathroom and a fourth bedroom in our basement. The way the plumbing was set up made the room a bit wonky and we really needed the extra storage space. So he built a hole in the wall but because the stairs upstairs hang low, it's not a normal sized door ( Read more... )

So I would chime in with my two cents, and recommend sticking with a door over a curtain. Especially if you think you'll ever sell this house or have someone besides members of your household use it. Even if a curtain blocks the view, it removes the illusion of privacy. Since people will tend to just move the curtain out of the way to get through vs opening and closing it there is no real way to know if it's occupied or not. Also it will be considered a detractor if you go to sell the house, so why not solve the problem right the first time?

Thank you, that's a good point. Plus we have a toddler and expect more! But just a note...this door is in the bathroom but not the door to the bathroom. This door goes to additional storage behind the bathroom. Only one into the storage room. :)

Ah in that case a curtain isn't the worst solution, but knowing that I personally am really bad at keeping my storage organized I'd still probably look for a door even if it wasn't ideal knowing that it would be easier to keep toddlers out. Best of Luck finding a good solution.

We're talking about the storage space, not the bathroom, right? In that case, I wouldn't put a door on it.

Make a trim panel and hold it in place with a magnetic catch in each corner. That way you can completely open the access hatch to move stuff and you don't lose any width to the door when it's open.

Yes, it's the door to the storage space.

That is an idea! I'll run it by the husband and see if he's interested in it. Thank you!

I have no idea if something like this even exists, but what about a roll up overhead door? It would be like a garage door but on a much smaller scale. It would be up and completely out of the way when open.

I was thinking maybe getting roman curtains? I have them in my room and it might work but I'm not sure. :/ Thanks for the idea!
