Because, seriously, John needs his own "side-kick" to help with the Sherlock-wrangling.
Because Mycroft is too busy being busy lazy Mycroft. Peter is too much an enabler. Jim is too changeable psychotic and full of bloodlust (not too mention wants to kill John). And none of the other characters really care.
John needs back-up!
