The Atkins Diet was originally designed for diabetics, and it helped my mom get her blood sugar down (when she followed it). I recommend it highly for anyone struggling with dangerous blood sugar levels. It's surprisingly effective.
It may work for you and Mark, as well. I found it difficult to sustain, mostly because I could never figure out what to take for lunch that wasn't a big pain in the butt. When I was working from home, I lost a good 10-12 lbs on it, though. And who doesn't love a "diet" that lets you eat bacon? Just make sure you also eat a ton of veggies, since fruit (as well as bread, pasta, etc.) is off the list for the first week or two.
Not that it's much comfort, and I'm guessing he wouldn't be at all happy with it, but in a worst-case-scenario he would likely qualify for disability

This is excellent advice. The glycemic index is useful to know, because regulating insulin levels seems to be important for the prevention of many diseases--not only diabetes, but also heart disease and cancer. I second what you are saying about Atkins--short term, it may be OK, but ketosis is something that diabetics and prediabetics are better off avoiding, and Atkins can cause it

i have a diabetic cookbook somewhere that i will try to find - i recall it having good stuff in it - but everything is chaos at the moment on account of having to move everything out of the dining room and off the kitchen counters so they could lay linoleum and paint.
I only just saw this, as I was trying to catch back up with LJ. Diabetes is on my radar screen this year, because my mom is diabetic, and I am at risk for it (hypoglycemic now, and tend to spill sugar during pregnancies
