LiveJournal, it seems I've left you behind, but I wanted to let you know that you're 80,000 times better than any of the current social-networking trends.

Karen, yo! I'm doing pretty well. Feeling very... Whitesnake, or something like that. How's it going?

Not too bad for me. I've been doing a bit of catching up on tv (The Tudors), some movies (the Brothers Grimm last week, Marie Antoinette perhaps today) and reading/writing (of a fanfic nature, despite being out of it for so many years).

Plus, with the exception of this, I'm very anti-social networking. :-) If I had a dollar for every time someone tells me that I should join Facebook....

Coolness. TV-wise, I've been digging Top Chef Masters. Finally saw Little Miss Sunshine the other day, which was pretty rad. Reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, which is also... pretty fucking rad.

I use all of the major networking sites (except Twitter), but not very often. They're all... bloated and recockulous. They're no longer a means of connecting, just a means of distraction.

Twitter is the crack cocaine of social networking. LJ is more like a refined pipe smoker (think Sherlock Holmes. Indubitably old chap, indubitably). Facebook is a crack den.

Very spot-on assessment.

MySpace is a crack den, Facebook is more of a cokewhore alley. Just my take.

Are you ever on aim, incidentally?

I don't use that anymore, either. Sometimes Yahoo! Messenger, under the name audiho.

Damn. My ancient laptop won't let me update Yahoo anymore.

I'd rather be/post here any day than on MySpace and Facebook, so I hear you. Actually, it's been so long that I've logged into MySpace, I can't seem to remember how to log in. LOL. I have this hideous feeling I was using an email address that is long extinct...but yet can't remember the password I used either. I think it's possibly a lost cause. :p Facebook I check every now and then, but it's not like I really participate that much. Plus, I think it's the one place online that I'm in the closet. Stupid full name crap where anyone can find you. :-p

Dude, how are you?

Yeah, I only use MySpace for music... Facebook, well, messaging friends on occasion. And chess. That's about it.

myspace is the most hideous website on the planet. there's no way i can get into that.

i was pretty much forced to sign up on facebook for a project i was working on awhile back. whatever else you might say about it, you have to admit that the site is very pretty and well put-together, and the iphone app is excellent. and i like that they force you to use your real name. but there's sort of a smarmy preppy feel to it that turns me off. also, mark zuckerberg is the anti-christ. any day now there will be an article in the press about his baby-eating.

have to admit that facebook has probably been a net win for me, though. several people found me that i hadn't heard from in decades. that was kind of cool.

I do think the site is put together quite well. Compared to MySpace, it is a total dream to navigate. The only pros I could give to MySpace in comparison are the ability to "customize" your page, and of course, post music for free.

As for reconnecting with old friends... I've found that it's an excited hello, and then silence for a year. It's cool for a day, in other words.

The reason I prefer LJ over all of those is because it cuts right to the substance. The focus is on your ideas, what really matters to you, how you're feeling, and it's not reduced into a silly status message. Facebook, MySpace, they fail to capture those things, but maybe I'm overstating the need for people to relate what matters to them... It matters more to me, anyway.
