I was determined not to be ready for Kindergarten because I would not be 5 years old for 2 months after the school year started.
At the time I could read on a 6th grade level, Do Math on an 8th grade Level, Tell Time (which my parents didn't know. I mis-interpreted a visual puzzle as "It is 4:00 to go" instead of "It is Time to go." when the analog clock had its hands at 4:00)
Good luck, but for some reason schools tend to be real sticklers about that one. At least they were in my day.
Unfortunately, though the schools are heavily enforcing this it really comes down to the way the law is written - which is why I got our elected officials involved.
I never want to push my kids too far or make them uncomfortable, but I'm afraid the current law and system will do just that. I'm okay for having an initial rule - I'm all about rules and enforce them myself - but really you have to anticipate and be prepared for exceptions especially if this is an on going demand.
You may want to talk to Tara some about how we've been dealing with Erin. She is both gifted and special needs and we have a whole fleet of psychiatrists occupational therapists and the like working with her, and it has made a REAL difference.
To me, it seems like the school just jumped on it and got everything fixed. I suspect Tara will tell you a different story. She may know how to jump through some of the hoops when your child is an exception.
