1. Character's Name: Riku 2. Fandom: Kingdom Hearts 3. Time Frame: Midway through 358/2 Days, just after Xion’s nightmare. 4. Age: 16
5. Background: Riku has always been an active player when it came to his own fate. He grew up on a small chain of islands known as the Destiny Islands, but was always curious about what lay beyond them. When he was young, an older boy managed to leave the islands and go to the outside world-“I bet he’s gotten really strong,” is what Riku imagined happened to him. Shortly after, he met a visitor from the outside world, a tall, dark-haired man who presented him with a key and told him that he would someday leave the islands: “…no ocean will contain you then. No more borders around, below, or above, so long as you champion the ones you love.Riku never really forgot Terra, but the encounter faded to the back of his mind as time went on. He grew strong on the islands, formed a lifelong connection to his biffles

Soon after closing Kingdom Hearts, Riku was brought to Castle Oblivion, where he was made to face the darkness within him. As he made his way through each basement he confronted his past, all his shortcomings and his newfound fears of the darkness. Although those he met were of no mind to help him do anything but succumb to the darkness once again, they forced him to accept his past for what it was and face his fears. And whenever he faltered, two valuable allies helped him out-King Mickey, first off, who helped him to fight against Ansem’s spirit when it resurfaced, and Naminé. Naminé, under the guise of Kairi, appeared to Riku and told him that “there’s no power that can defeat you-not the light, not the dark.” She helped Riku to see that he needn’t fear the darkness, that he could use its power without giving in to its temptations. With her encouragement he was able to use his darkness to find his way out of an illusion of light

He hates being reminded of his mistakes. For a long time Riku was the one everybody looked up to, and so every mistake he made threw that position into jeopardy. He’s the sort to deny that he ever made a mistake in the first place-but like so much else, he’s having to rethink that stance. Riku tries to run from his mistakes, but if it becomes apparent that he can’t avoid it, he’ll face it head-on. (That doesn’t stop him from trying to martyr himself, though: “If [I fail], use your powers to destr-” “Of course! I’ll be right there to save ya!” “Huh? No, that’s not it. I want you to destr-” “NO WAY.”) Riku’s used to other people bringing up his various failings in conversations by this point, so it’s begun to have an effect on his personality: he is, at the outset, respectful to nobody. You have to earn his respect, because he’s expecting you to either start slinging comments about how he couldn’t control the darkness within him, or begin trying to order him around. For that reason, he seems to have a pricklier exterior than he did on

13. Writing sample - Third Person Prose: Riku looked out over the land, his thoughts in disarray.
He’d been sent out by DiZ to find the Nobody they’d discovered, the one that was wielding the Keyblade. He’d steeled himself in the castle before setting out. He’d thought he’d been prepared for anything he’d had to face, had been ready and willing to come up against a Nobody of his best friend…
He hadn’t been ready to come face-to-face with a Nobody of Kairi, though. At least, not one that belonged to Organization XIII.
Riku lifted his hand, looking at it for a moment before clenching a tight fist. He thought of the battle: he’d kept his cool, tossed her Keyblade aside. “A sham,” he’d called it. “Worthless.”
You’re the real sham!A wry smile crossed his lips. She didn’t know how right she was. Here he was, fighting for the light, fighting for Sora’s sake, when just months ago he would have sooner tried to kill him. It was more than he deserved, to have been brought out of the darkness to try and play the hero again. More than he
