5. Background: The Kid was born in Caelondia, a massive city of the Old World. Caelondia was founded by pioneers that came across the Boundless Sea and it quickly became a center of trade and learning. Caelondia's unique position was due in part to its monopoly over Burstone Quarry, which the Caelondians had purchased from the Ura, a race of people who lived underground. Burstone Quarry not only provided the Caelondians with a source of valuable trade fodder, it also gave them unlimited access to the Cores which powered the City and enabled its technological marvels. As the city grew, the Caelondians sought to expand its borders ad began cultivating other sections of land. One are was named Point Lemaign. It was there the Caelondians constructed the Grand Rail which became a major transportation line.

When he awoke the Kid immediately made his way to the Bastion, a place where everyone was supposed to go in case of emergency. After arriving there he met an old man named Rucks. The two immediately began working to put their world back together by finding Cores to power the Bastion. Along the way the Kid found other survivors, two Ura named Zia and Zulf, and even some animals as well

The Kid’s not without compassion either. In fact he’s got that in spades, for his mother, for Rucks, for Zia, for Caelondia, and even for Zulf and the Ura. When he finds other Caelondians reduced to statues of ash he feels sorrow for what happened to them and always regrets disturbing their remains when it happens. He doesn’t much care for fighting with the beasts, the Ura, and the Gasfellas, the other survivors of the Calamity, either and he’ll do his best to save who he can. Of course, when they leave him no other option then he’ll bring his hammer to bear. That doesn’t mean he’s going to like it though. In the end, not only did he end up bringing Zulf and Zia back to the Bastion with him, but a menagerie of animals as well. If he’s going to work to undo what the Calamity did then he’s going to save everyone, not just the Caelondians. Even after Zulf betrayed everyone by trying to destroy the Bastion, and later has his own people turn on him, the Kid chooses to save his life instead of leaving him to die. 13. Writing sample - Third Person:The Kid trekked tirelessly through the Tazal Terminals. He had to be reaching the end by now and soon enough this whole mess would be over. Caelondia would be saved but not only that, so would the Ura and the Gasfellas and the creatures and everything else out there. Once they had this final core they would all be safe and whole again. Maybe then the Kid would be able to sit down and take a break. He pushed the thought out of his head. He could think about that once he got back to the Bastion, but right now he still had plenty of work to do
