So, due to having had to mention this to multiple younger women in the various CF communities to which I belong, I figured I would write one centrally-located help post for all of you out there fighting desperately to be sterilized. PLEASE CIRCULATE THIS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Link back or give credit as needed, but I really just want all the ( Read more... )

Great guide. I'm one of the lucky ones who was able to get sterilized at the ripe old age of 22, but I have two friends who are fighting to get sterilized, and they're not having any luck. I'll definitely be showing this to them.

Thank you for posting this. :)

I will be sure to circulate this. As someone who wants to be sterilized, this was helpful.

Well written. It's just cRazy though, how you had to wait soooooooo long for any action. It sounds like that the norm, eh?

I rather enjoyed reading this entire post, and intend to press a little more when it comes to my lack of desire for children when I head in to switch birth controls soon.

I do have a question, though! At first I thought it was just my GYN trying to scare me/talk me out of getting an IUD, but a close family friend had one in before she had her first child and she said it hurt/was uncomfortable. Those are the only two people to tell me it wasn't a good idea because I have not given birth. You, a commenter here, and several other people ~on the internet~ have not said anything about pain in regards to IUDs. Pardon my prying, but did it hurt at all?

Yeah, it'll probably hurt. I won't lie. It's really not the most comfortable thing in the world at all. However, it's temporary & TOTALLY worth the trouble. Basically, you can expect three pains; there's a tool that's used to stabilize your cervix called a tenaculum (which looks a million times worse than it is, I promise), and that pinches your cervix so it's a pretty steady cramping pain for the duration of the procedure. Then there's the sounding, where another tool is used (just called a sound; it also looks worse than it is) to measure your uterus. It's a metal or plastic rod that's pushed through your cervix & will hit the back/top of your uterus, so you'll probably feel a sharp cramp then. Then the insertion device is pushed through your cervix, so you may get one more cramp, and then you're golden ( ... )

I have gotten 2 Paragards. The first one started coming out after 4 days and I got a replacement and it started coming out after 2 days. I had very painful cramps after insertion that hurt worse than the actual insertion to the point where I couldn't sleep. I am now on a mission to get sterilized. I am 23.

Thank you so much for writing this! I'll definitely be bookmarking it and using it whenever I start petitioning for my own sterilization.

And as a few other people have said, you have a really awesome writing style! This was informative AND enjoyable to read. Very nice work. :D
