5 years ago, i told my mom i didn't want to go to berkeley because she just wanted me to go there because she went there. i was in a rebellious teenager stage. then we visited the campus when i was in 9th grade and i fell in love. berkeley was quickly tied at the top of my list with ucla and yale.

Do NOT buy a coat with your mother! Come here first, talk to people who've lived here, go window shopping for what styles and/or colors you'd like. HERE.
THEN go back to LA in December/January and buy an amazingly beautiful and sturdy coat at Macy's for 85% off. And trust me, it will be 85% off, because no one in the Valley is going to buy a wool coat.
I only say this because I wasted a lot of time returning a too bulky, unattractive ski jacket. A nice, fitted, colorful wool coat will be just as warm, and you won't look like a turtle.
