10. The Cost of Freedom
They were almost to the front door when the robot finally caught up to them. Marabelle slipped, and her ankle snapped with an audible 'CRACK!' Panting from the pain, she wheezed, "Caffrey, take Peter and get to safety."
"What about you, Marabelle?" Peter asked, "we can't leave you behind."
Marabelle smiled-or tried to, as it came out more as a pained grimace.
"I'll be alright, Peter," she assured him, though her words rang false.
"STOP AT ONCE, DOCTOR," ordered Krayken, sensing Marabelle's presence near the front door.
"Go, Neal, before it realizes that I'm not alone," Marabelle ordered, "and don't worry about fixing Peter, he's got the instructions in his pocket."
"Thank you," Neal said, before racing the rest of the way to the front door with Peter in his arms, yelling at the CI to stop.
As soon as the door closed behind them, Marabelle turned to face Krayken.
"You are going to have to kill me, Krayken," she informed the robot.
"I CAN NOT KILL YOU WITHOUT APPROVAL FROM A HIGHER LIFEFORM."(1)
"Krayken, activate voice recognition program," Marabelle ordered.
"VOICE RECOGNIZATION PROGRAM ACTIVATED. VOICE IDENTIFIED AS MARABELLE EASTIN."
"Krayken, run Program Zero-Zero-Zero(2)," Marabelle ordered.
"ACKNOWLEDGED."
1. By higher life form, Krayken means someone other than Marabelle. I think.
2. Any Star Trek fans reading this will probably know what Marabelle is doing…and what Program Zero-Zero-Zero does.
