Phew! Tedious but not too difficult to solve.

Not wanting to spend a whole weekend without access to my PC I phoned Harvey Norman from whom we purchased my Acer a couple of years ago.  There were very stern warnings about not letting anyone interfere with the body of the PC to preserve the warranty and I didn't necessarily want to trek all the way across to Porirua to get technical assistance ( Read more... )

a few of us have Eeepcs. But I would advise you to wait for the new Eeepcs that have an 8/9inch screen in the same space. I love mine and prefer to take that to work (When I need one there) rather than the laptops. The keyboard takes a little getting used to but after that you will have no problems. I have a pink one. :) It runs on linux and you can attach a portable harddrive to make it more useful for storage.

agree with all of that. Mine is more conventional black :)
and you can get windows. I was a bit chicken. I wanted to break free of windows but couldn't be stuffed taking the chance of not being able to run my 3 (as in the mobile phone network) modem.
Awaywithfairies has Linux as does one of my workmates.

Anyway it was just fantastic to cart to England on recent trip. No problems logging into wireless networks at hotels and airports.

Takes up little more room than a book

Yes, it was the size and weight that initially appealed. Don't like to think of being minus the capacity to write or connect for the 10 weeks we will be away. When we had the mishap this weekend I just knew that I really need to get a spare. Now, knowing that there are several of "us" with one already that is a great encouragement. Not sure that I could cope with Linux so will stick with Windows if that is an available option.
Thanks for that response.

Thanks for that response. It is beginning to sound more and more possible. Not sure I am au fait with attaching portable hard-drives but that would certainly extend the capacity. It is much more for the lightness in travelling than anything else that my interests are aroused.

awaywithfairies and I have an eee as do two of my work colleagues.
Wonderful.
As I am a two to three finger typist the keyboard size is of no concern

Good to hear from you. Now I know where to come if/when I buy one and get into trouble with it. Four LJers and one hopeful Wombles is surely a great endorsement.

Yes, I have an eee pc. I bought it primarily as a means of accessing the internet when I am on holiday. The lightness and portability is an asset in that regard. The keyboard *is* quite small but, for me, is manageable. Then again, I've only used it for short periods (an hour or so) at a time.

Since buying one a couple of months ago, I've had a couple of trips interstate. I found it very handy to access wifi internet at State Libraries and the like. Have not needed to visit an Internet Cafe since!

The small memory is not really as issue for me as I don't intend to do much more that web browsing or a bit of word processing on it.

I've also found it useful at home a couple of times when my "proper" laptop decided to be difficult. I just grabbed the eee and trotted next door to thelocal social club to use their free wi-fi. I then sorted out my primary laptop later on when I had the time and inclination.

Thanks so much for that response. I'm guessing that you have the 700 model as the 900 is only just on the market now - it has a slightly larger screen and more capacity. Buoyed on by responses here I guess I will take the plunge. I'm not keen to have Linus though and will opt for Windows if that is possible. You may yet get calls for help.

Erik's got an Eee PC which he uses when he goes away on holiday (or just to play Cave Story or browse the internet in bed)

It certainly seems that EeePC has the approval of Live Journalers. Thanks for your response.
