Mama, don't let your sons grow up to go to a U2 concert

Last Thursday, Marci and I went to see U2. It was, by far, the worst concert experience I've ever had, although it wasn't entirely U2's fault. But let me start at the beginning ( Read more... )

It sounds like you and Marci had a similar experience to Chris and I when we saw Green Day at the Toyota Center in Houston. They put on a good show and all (very high energy), but the political commentary got on my nerves, the fans got on my nerves, the hokey insertion of "Houston" in every other line of every other song irritated me, our seats blew, and Jimmy Eat World (who I've seen before) wasn't even good as an opener, which made me sad because I like them a lot.

I think it's the curse of the large arena show. The more intimate smaller shows are just so much more enjoyable. I don't enjoy fighting through crowds, either, and it just always seems to be worse at arenas. The only exception I've ever experienced was when I saw Phish in Chicago. Everyone in the crowd was so stoned that they were completely mellow. It was kind of amusing.

That's disappointing, though. I've always wanted to see U2 live and heard their shows are so great...it must be groupthink or something.

First, I'm impressed that you actually read all that. I really had to rant.

I agree that shows are always better at the smaller venues, but Beck, Weezer, and Foo Fighters were all great at the Patriot Center. It's not as big as the MCI Center, but it's pretty damn big.

Radiohead still remains the best large venue show I've ever seen. They just played their music and didn't address the crowd very much.

I really can't recommend seeing U2. Well, unless you know what to expect, and can accept that, of course.

And the worst part is....I NEVER LEARNED TO READ! mojomuze October 25 2005, 12:28:56 UTC
Hey, I'm living alone in a hotel right now. At night, I have a lot of free time for reading. Don't expect me to read anything over 3 paragraphs when I get back to D.C., though ( ... )

No. My rants deserve space to roam.

Besides, it's just text. It doesn't cause any problems when loading and people can simply gloss over it if they don't want to read it.

I cant believe I read the whole thing. I mean, you kind of had to expect that from U2...sorry it was an expensive bummer.

You read the whole thing? Awww, you do love me.

You're right, I should have expected the political bullshit (and I did somewhat), but not after Every. Single. God. Damn. Song. That was just atrocious.
