A friend musing that "Zoe could probably kick Mal's butt" made me wonder what circumstances might lead to such an encounter. This is where my thoughts led...
Wow. Just...wow. In such a brief space, not only have you've written great characterizations, but you've built an incredible dynamic between Mal and Zoe. I love, love, LOVE your Zoe's resolve; her absolute ability to dig her heels in with Mal until he sees the light...one way or the other.
Thank you so much. I really do enjoy exploring the Mal & Zoe dynamic, especially as it developed pre-series. I wonder if I'm going to find myself writing a third story in this timeframe. :)
I love this. Mind, I see Mal as more practical than this, but possibly only because he's BECOME more practical. And I love that he wouldn't hit Zoe and how much that pissed her off.
Thank you! I also see Mal as more practical than this, in most cases. But I also see him as very human, and I imagine that at some point during five years of war, he must have battled dark moments when his emotions overrode his common sense, when he couldn't quite accept loss and his part in it. I imagine his state of mind here to be a passing thing - as Zoe says, he'll be himself in the morning - but this being a Mal who still believed, who hadn't yet been broken, I think he's temporarily overwhelmed and driven to foolish and rash action. Luckily he has Zoe to straighten him out.
Whew, guess I've been thinking about that a little bit. :) Thanks for leaving a comment.
Oh my gosh. I just love Mal & Zoe pieces. The whole relationship is so wide open for exploration. You do a wonderful job with everything about them. Their voice, their interactions with each other are perfect. I simply loved this and it's so them. I'm always fascinated by their realtionship. The way they can read each other, their co-dependency. But this is what I see missing in most fanfics - their equally strong personalities butting up against each other. Really great work. Please write more.
Thanks very much. I love exploring Mal & Zoe as well, for the reasons you've stated. There is so much in their history and their present-day relationship that gets me thinking... And they are both very strong personalities, which, to me, begs the question "why does Zoe follows Mal?" Which I just love to write about. (Pssst -I have another fic on this LJ page with my ideas on that, called "Sir", which you might like.) Thanks for commenting.

Oh, thank you, I will. Actually I added this story to my memories and I bookmarked your LJ so that I could go back and read all your stuff. But it was late when I got around to reading last night and I couldn't do them justice.
Also, if you like Mal/Zoe as much as I do, you might like an old story I found on Fireflyfans.net. I'm not sure how to link it here but if you'll click on my journal and go to May 3rd or close you'll see Old Firefly Rec. I've emailed this author and she's going to write more fanfic.
I'm a huge, massive, ginormous Mal/Inara shipper, but I love Mal and Zoe pieces as well. I hope you keep writing them.

Very, very true to the characters. And Zoe can absolutely kick his ass. Like srichard, I thought her anger at his refusal to hit back was absolute Zoe and Mal. Really wonderful dialogue and war story.
Thank you! I really enjoy writing them. Or, I should say, transcribing their conversation, because that's what it feels like when I get into that frame of mind. They're such great, deep, complicated characters, I feel very lucky to get to play with them. (Thanks, Joss.) And yes, Zoe could kick his ass, even if he was fighting back.
I'm such a sucker for anything about Mal and Zoe pre-series. Well, anything Mal and Zoe, but especially pre-series. There's so much history there, six years worth of it... and GAH. This was a fantastic look at something that could have happened between them in the war.
Like everyone else said - I love that she can kick his ass, but that it hurt her he wouldn't hit back. Lovely. Perfect. Thank you.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm glad this worked for you. I'd have to say this (imaginary) episode took a little bit out of both of them, but made their bond stronger. Just one musing of many on how they got to where they are in the series.
*thinks about that gap between the war and the series pilot* Hmmmmmmmm. Thanks! :)
