But who's the disciplinarian?

From what we've been told and read in cat books, the cat should think that God is the disciplinarian. Supposedly cats, unlike dogs, hold grudges, so if they jump on the counter near the stove and you spray them with water, they shouldn't see that you're the one actually doing the spraying. That way they think, "Oh, when I jump on the stove, I get hit somehow with water. I guess I'll stop doing that." As opposed to, "Oh, that bastard owner sprayed me. Now I'm going to find new ways to decorate his apartment with pee."

But of course we're novices with the whole cat thing. I forget, did you grow up with cats?

Yeah. But there was no discipline. I had a female cat, spayed, so she wasn't really into marking her territory. Once, she jumped on the stove while I was cooking and I instinctively smacked her down. But she singed her whiskers, so she must have agreed that God did not want her to jump into a gas flame.
