It's not cool to talk about the pope that way...he has been one of the most influencial men of the 20th century...catholic or not, show a little respect.

In what ways has he been influential? I honestly may not know, but was he influential beyond the sphere of Catholicism? Because I would say that, as a non-believer, an individual's influence and importance in affecting an organized religion which I support in no way, shape, or form and I might even say that I despise, that is no reason for me to respect him.
But, again, personally, I show respect in this situation simply too; but I choose to show respect because it's a man on his death bed, not because that man happens to be the pope.
So, I guess in all that I'm really just asking how the pope has been influential beyond the religion he oversees.
Yes I know, I am long winded.

need I say more? Oh yeah, he was also a stand-up man. The first pope to come out and officially recognize the Holocaust on behalf of the catholic church and apologize for the indignities done to the jewish people, which the catholics ignored at the time.
