~BE WARNED!! I was pretty upset when I wrote this, but NO ONE has permission to make my friends cry. Rampant emo-ness imminent, everybody.~

I'm angry at someone I've never even met.

For the past few months, my best friend Kim has been looking forward to meeting her, dare I say, idol John Barrowman at a convention in Chicago. "Torchsong" was ( Read more... )

Barrowman's ankle anonymous June 5 2009, 08:31:47 UTC
While you have every right to be annoyed that John won't be at the convention, he didn't just sprain an ankle, he tore ALL the ligaments in his left ankle, and his doctor has said he is not medically fit to fly. That is the problem, not the pain of the injury as such, but that he can't fly to the USA from England now, so can't get to the convention. Apparently he is still going to try to put on some sort of show, despite the pain, via a video link from England. I know that will not be the same as seeing him live, but I think John is doing his best in the circumstances. It's the convention organizers who people should really rant at, as apparently they didn't have insurance to cover things like their main guest injuring himself.

I'm actually really stoked that you guys care enough about John to scan personal journals for mentions of him! Kim would probably do the same thing. >w< And, mind you, I was very upset that my best friend and hetero life-mate was disappointed to the point of crying by someone I couldn't physically yell at. Though it does seem like this thing was ill-fated from the get-go with what happened to the other planned attendees! D: Again, thanks for reading and commenting! I appreciate it! Just leave your names next time, k?

While I understand your disappointment, it's hardly fair to call him such names when he's in severe agony and is not actually *allowed* to fly from the UK to the US. It is quite literally out of his hands.

And he doesn't have a broken ankle - he has ruptured every single ligament in his left ankle and can't even move, let along manage to get to another country, perform on stage etc all weekend.

So I understand your upset (I have been in similar situations), but your comments are not really fair IMO. As it is, he is speaking at the panels via video link - not the same I know, but more than his doctors would advise I'd bet.

Seriously, guys? Calm down. We're all just pissed on behalf of our friend. No one is condemning Barrowman for anything. This was just post to blow off some steam and rant a little bit. That's what blogs are for, after all. ^_^ Take it easy, people.

Well she did call him a douche and basically say that he couldn't be bothered to turn up. Pretty horrible thing to say IMO when someone is seriously hurt and banned from flying meaning they have no choice but not to attend.

K...as far as the flying thing, considering it was the day before the event was supposed to start, wouldn't it have been prudent to fly in BEFORE? Therefore avoiding the whole "not allowed to fly" thing? As for the "not a broken ankle" thing you're right. It wasn't broken; it was sprained. Torn ligaments are the very definition of a sprained ankle. So, yeah, he is MIA because of a sprained ankle.

As for ranting at the organizers, trust me, they too have been ranted at for attempting to substitute Barrowman with Peter Wingfield and acting like we should be impressed and for their complete cocking up of the situation. Now, I found out they've lost three of their headliners...Kai, John, and now Tom Price may not be there either...my question is who IS going to show up? And why did I waste a fortune for a bunch of crap my sister isn't going to get?

This was a once in a lifetime thing for her and now it's shot to hell. Please pardon her dear friends and family for being a wee bit peeved at EVERYONE involved.

Who gave you a medical degree? Sprained ankles and torn ligaments are NO WAY the same thing. Do you realize how severe a torn ligament actually is?

K, now that I've ranted...I like the new layout...Kim's gonna freak when she sees it...You know she's got a big female boner over that guy (no, I do not know his name and am not ashamed to admit I don't.)

I am shocked and appalled at you, Jennifer! So what if he's not a real person!... God, that's sad. Well, thanks anyway. I worked really hard on tweaking someone else's style sheet to make this work! >w< Ja ne!

You might want to watch John Barrowman's released video statement, about why he couldn't make it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOFVa7uPxqM

Now, I have no idea what day he was supposed to fly out, but on the Monday, he had his last concert of his tour, on the Tuesday, he wrecked his ankle. So flying out really early (say, the weekend before) wasn't an option, because he was working.

This isn't an attempt to say 'OMG, he's wonderful and can do no wrong!' or 'Your friend sucks' or to negate how you feel about John Barrowman, but I thought you might want to hear from the source himself why he couldn't fly to Chicago. Not 'wouldn't', he physically couldn't fly.

I hope your friend managed to have a good time anyway.

And yes, I will lose some respect for John Barrowman if he ever has any business dealings with the people who put on Torchsong, after reading a few reports about how they dealt with the fans.
