I don't understand the phenomenon of the "straightedge trend" either, if by "trend" they mean "fad." (and they do.) Because they're different things. If it's a fad, it's the longest running fad I know of. Since, what...1981? A 25 year fad, eh? I don't think so.
I think when people stop being edge, it doesn't have anything to do with "Oh I didn't want the label." It either has to do with other edge kids making the whole straightedge thing look bad and not wanting to be a part of it (which is just a nice way of saying that you let the actions of other edge kids and the opinions of other non-edge kids dictate what you want to call yourself), or really just not wanting to take on the responsibility of being edge.
I, although am edge, do not claim it openly and overtly,(by this I mean I don't go around telling people "Hi I'm Matt and I'm edge, oh wait you smoke? fuck you then!" haha, not so litterally, the last part was just for humor)
But, I did notice that when I did, I started to become unreasonably biased against those who werent edge. So I stopped pointing out my lifestyle and realized the my biases ceased. So the edge 'title' or 'label' or maybe it was the 'scene' is somewhat out of control, or it was to me. So thats why I think people are denouncing the 'title' or 'label' or whatever you want to call it.
But then again, I could be totally wrong, thats just me. This was, in no way, meant to be offensive to anyone.
When I first met you - you said, and I qoute "Hi I am Matthew Alex Kaltman - I am edge, and vegan. Occasionally I eat meat, and do a little meth, but their's a 24 hour grace period, so I am quite dandy in all retrospects".
its not necessary to say youre straight edge just because you odnt do drugs and dont drink. its a personal choice for yourself. its only a "trend" when people do it because everyone else is doing it. someone can be all about drinking and drugs and then one day decide not to do that anymore. they dont have to wear x's and claim edge just because they decided to stop drinking and drugs.
i just think everyone should stop worrying about what others do, but i'm sure with saying that someone is going to attack me and tell me i don't know what i'm talking about. i understand that straight-edge has been around for a while, but i think people call it a "trend" because so many kids are now days. by that i just mean not so many people knew about it before. AND honestly i do know a few people who just do it to fit in. i don't give a shit what they say, and i think it's those kids who fuck it up for the people who truely believe in being straight edge. anyway, i'll just shut up now.

It bothers me when kids who were straight edge before being straight edge was "cool" drop it because of how trendy it's gotten.
I mean... If you're not PART of the trend side of it... Why care who is?
