more realistically, an Acura RSX-S or a honda Civic or a Toyota Celica from '98 or so

98? Won't that have too many miles on it?

98? I dunno... Doubt it. hondas and toyotas run forEVER.. and acura IS honda.. the RSX-S i test drove was fun, but didn't really fit me :)
if 98's too old, you could go for something newer, i was just guessing.

I found a toyota corolla '99 with 56k miles on it that I want to nab but I don't think I can get approved for an auto loan until I've been working my new job for a couple months...

it's reasonably priced, cute, fun colors, great gas mileage, and the LA Times just wrote an article saying it's the best car on the market.

Get your hands on some Consumer Reports. They do extensive product testing of each year's cars regarding how well they drive, how safe they are, etc.
