[The video is focused on a small pile of paper fortunes. Some are visible: "Things aren't always as they seem." "Your life will take a new turn." "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer." Penny doesn't bother turning the camera towards her.]I usually really like fortune cookies. Sure, they don't always taste great, but they're fun ( Read more... )

sorrow, curse, cookies, so confused, bad character judgment, every drop of rain

One of those sounds like part of our family wisdom: "Nothing is as it appears." My grandfather used to tell my father that, and then Daddy passed it on down to me, just the same.

Doesn't that make things kind of difficult, though? If nothing is the way it appears, what're we supposed to think about the things around us? The people?

Well, it's mostly for the sake of adventuring, and I don't think it's meant to mean that everything in the world is really some sort of deception. It's just that you shouldn't overlook something just because it doesn't seem worthy of looking at, and that you should take the time to find things out for certain, rather than just assuming you know how they go.

That makes sense. So assuming that all of the people you know are good people who won't go on killing sprees probably isn't the best way to go?

I usually think they're fun too. But some of the ones I've seen from yesterday were kind of messed up.

They were! Mine were pretty normal, I think.

Did you get any? Did they come true?

Why'd you get so many?

horrible_penny September 16 2010, 21:03:52 UTC
Mostly because not many people like fortune cookies, I guess. Did you find any?

Just one. About medication.

Was it good or bad?

They don't taste all that bad. Gave the fortunes to Tiger to bury though, didn't want to see what they said.

I don't think so, either. Did he really bury them? Or did he eat them because they were cookie-flavored?

'e tried eatin' 'em but I wouldn't let 'im. ...think 'e might 'ave buried one or two in the plants, but I cleaned up the mess.

Good. I don't know what would happen if cursed fortunes got eaten.

There is a small part of Chris that feels guilty about using Penny for police business, but it's outweighed by what he's seen on Sorrow. It's okay as long as she doesn't get hurt by it at all and maybe if he doesn't do something about it, her being Sorrow's friend, she WILL get hurt.

He stands outside the Welcome Centre for a bit to finish off his cigarette, and then stubs it out, leaving it carefully just by the bin. He'll toss it out once he comes out again. Doesn't want to set the rubbish alight. Walking in, he looks around for Penny.

Penny's seated at one of the tables, trying to figure out how to fold an origami crane. The diagram in front of her clearly isn't doing much to help her. There's no one else in the Center at the moment.

"Chris," she says with a small smile, flicking the mangled attempt at a crane off of the table, "hey. What's up? Shouldn't you be at work? ...Not that I mind you coming in or anything."

"Hullo," says Chris and sits down at the table as well. He tilts his head to look over at the diagram, and smiles slightly. "Blimey, that looks tough." Pausing, he looks back up at Penny.

"Thing is, I sort of-- So, um, I 'eard you're mates with this bloke, Sorrow, yeah? S'just that...'e might've gone a bit...dangerous, like."

"I'm sure it's not as hard as this makes it look." Penny doesn't seem all that convinced.

She's also visibly caught off-guard by the fact that Chris is here on business. "Oh. Yeah, I--yeah." Her hands, folded neatly in her lap, suddenly become terribly interesting.
