Possible lease/project

I'd love to get your guy's opinions on this mare whom I am going to look at with the possibility of leasing and breaking to ride. She's a 6 year old QH who's been a brood mare most of her life and is therefore seriously out of shape. I would be wanting her for trail riding/ general ranch stuff maybe doing some cattle work eventually/ and depending ( Read more... )

The two biggest things that stand out for me are that she looks a tad downhill, and she's cow hocked. That being said, her colt is CUTE (and flashy!). I dunno... for just general pleasure riding and fooling around she should be fine. I don't know much about how her confo will effect her being able to work cattle. She does look like she needs her feet done tho. :(

The foal is super cute! I think I'm leaning towards not doing this lease now due to a variety of factors. I think he's had a hard time catching her since she came back from her lease last year, so her feet probably have not been done for a while. Poor little girl.

I didn't even notice it was a lease! I would NOT pay to lease her, especially if she is either not broke or needs to be re-schooled. I would consider taking her off their hands, but only as a resale project. They seem like they don't have enough time for her (which is obvious by the feet and the rope), but they want to keep her.... why? Just as a broodmare? Fine, take better care of her. Ugh, whatever. If she were for sale (and cheap), I'd say go for it. But as a lease... maybe if it were a free lease. I'd at least go to see her, though. She might just need her own person, you never know. And you also never know what you can work out in person, or if there is another part to that story.

Keep us (uh, me) posted!

I did decide to not go for it. I decided it was just too much work for very little reward. I'm now considering a free lease on a stunning arab mare who is also green but has a good mind and has been shown halter. I posted about it over in equestrian earlier today. http://community.livejournal.com/equestrian/5641489.html

general riding i'm sure she'd be perfectly fine. but they are gonna charge YOU for breaking THEIR horse??? totally does not seem fair. when i break a horse, i get paid...don't have to pay for the privelege!

I didn't read the text and here, when you said breaking I thought you meant how that mare is going to break her neck with the catch rope and the nylon halter!

I cringed when I saw the rope- apparently she's hard to catch.

I think you are right. However most of the horses up for lease in my area are either extremely green, absolutely no saddle experience, or only top level competition horses that I'd be afraid to damage. Since I'm not a professional I would feel strange demanding that they pay me a fee to break their horse. I've trained a horse to saddle before but I'm not a trainer.
