Part III

It is 9:17 in the morning and today is her last day. With the fellowship ending, she is moving on to newer (and better?) things. As you watch her get a pot of coffee ready, it suddenly dawns on you that this will be the last time you see her go through the motions.

Not just any motions, but these specific motions: The coffee preparation, the way she sorts your mail, always keeping up with her clinic hours, the reading of articles and medical texts, and the way she sits at her desk to answer emails. It’s predictable, routine, and dependable.

“Good morning.” A smile.

She holds out a mug of fresh coffee, and your eyes meet hers for a moment. Probably longer. She looks down at the Nintendo DS that is open on your desk, crossing her arms self consciously. You don’t think it has sunk in yet, for either of you. She’s leaving and yet here you both are going about your day as if things aren’t about to drastically change. You stare up at her, studying her face as you always do. She’s different now, somehow. Perhaps it’s the fact that she will no longer be yours.

Or maybe it’s the way she is standing there, staring back at you. Something breaks as soon as you put down your coffee mug on the glass desk. There’s a finality to her going away, not just to another hospital, but to another state. She turns to leave your office and you take a breath.

“I’ll miss your coffee.”

She stops and looks over her shoulder at you. “What?” Even though you both know she heard what you said.

Instead of repeating the words, you pick up your Nintendo DS. She waits patiently to see if you will say anything else. When you don’t, a gentle sigh escapes her and she returns to the conference room. This is too easy. You’ve always been able to get under her skin and it is probably something that will never change.

You are surprised when she walks into your office eight minutes later, and holds out a ziplock bag of cigars.

“A going away present. Except, I am the one that is going away.” She says as you take the bag from her hand.

You look at her and nod. “Thank you.” Your voice is awkward because saying those two words has never been easy for you. Slowly you stand up from your chair, fidgeting with the plastic ziplock bag. It’s before 10 in the morning, but there is nothing stopping you from enjoying a cigar. You push open the balcony door and look at her expectantly.

She blinks, an uncertain expression on her face, before she finally makes the decision to go out onto the balcony. She watches as you produce a cigar cutter out of thin air, clip the end of one, and then light it. Grey smoke snakes around you as you puff on the cigar.

She knows you well, you realize, because she has managed to find your favorite brand. Neither of you speak; instead you stand side by side, looking out at the view. A few more long puffs on the cigar before you finally look over at her. Her head is tilted up to the sky and her eyes are closed.

Peaceful, you think. Her features soften further as a smile breaks out across her face.

“I can feel you staring at me.” She murmurs.

You are uncertain what to say to that, so you blow cigar smoke in her direction, a sort of nonverbal acknowledgement.

She moves, pulling at your jacket so that you are now facing each other. Her eyes are searching, probing, reaching inside of you. Her gaze is astonishing and you force yourself to blink to break the trance. You stop wondering what her lips feel like because right now the softness and warmth of them are making you tingle. She is standing on her tiptoes and her hand touches your cheek. Yeah, this is way too easy.

You breathe in her scent of spicy vanilla, and your tongue tastes the strawberry lip balm on her lips. She is looking at you, waiting for your reaction, whatever it maybe. You tap your cane on the ground as a distraction because, frankly, you have no idea what else to do or say.

“I'll grab your coffee.” She says, stepping back from you.

You take a puff of your cigar and nod. For awhile longer the two of you can pretend that she isn't leaving. A smirk makes its way onto your face.
