one of my exes had one. we cooked rice in it once or twice and after the second time I don't even remember how long it was before we opened it again (it could have been weeks, it could have been over a month or even two) and dear god it was colors I didn't know food could turn.
it was his rice cooker kept at his residence, so he really should have cleaned it, but I ended up with the task anyway. :[
now my parents have a nifty one with an automatic timer and tells you right on the thing the rice to water ratio and everything and my dad still manages to screw it up every time. I honestly do not know how. thank goodness I moved out :[
I love my rice cooker. It's also one with an auto timer and rice to water ratio label. I probably use it about twice a week on average.
I think the secret trick is that you (not you personally, in this case your ex BF) actually should clean it once you have used it instead of leaving rice in it until you use it the next time!
I used to leave the kettle & toaster out because that's what everyone does. Then I realised we never use either (once a month or less), I was unplugging & shuffling them to make room for the blender or deep fryer more often than I was actually boiling water or making toast.
D. Forever! My boyfriend and I leave out the toaster, french press, electric can opener, electric tea kettle and small odd grill thing. However, they're always clean and it's just us. There's enough counter space left to prepare a sammich or what not.
I don't understand living in filth though. Boy oh boy.
This. It actually never occurred to me to put appliances away. To me, counter space is for appliances. Putting them away to free up space is negating the entire point of having counters.
We've never put any appliances away either (unless it's something really bulky that we never use), so it's weird to hear about people on this community doing it on a regular basis. I can understand if there is incredibly limited space, but things like kettle/toaster/blender etc never get put away. (I'd kill my OH since I drink a lot of tea lol)
Same here. Currently I don't have the counter/bench space to keep out all my appliances, so it's been kept down to the toaster and coffee maker to make sure I have prep space for cooking.
I'm currently in a relationship with an appliance hoarder, and it drives me nuts. He has so many appliances he doesn't have enough cupboard space for them. There's no counter space to prepare anything. I burned my tummy taking something out of the oven because I was trying to find a place to put it down. It's ridiculous. I hate it.

the longest I've ever left an appliance out is overnight (after using it in the evening), personally, and I put it away first thing in the morning...

A rice cooker used every three weeks is at most an overnight/until next meal time option. Two meal times at most.
A kettle, toaster or other all day every day item is ok to sit out unless the bench is positively tiny.

Ugh I hate that. We have loads of appliances & fortunately loads of cupboard to make up for the small amount of bench space.
