I was reading a news article, I think from CNN, where the writer said that just because the tide rises, it doesn't mean it raises all the boats with it. Clearly, this person has a poor understanding of how buoyancy and tides work. It made me laugh.

Lately I've been taking the initiative to actually go out and exercise. Monday I went down to Hawk Island Park and rollerbladed around almost all of the paved trails. Wow, a basic economic principle that I am giving serious thought to, outside of an economics class. How interesting. That principle would be: opportunity cost. Opportunity cost is the value of everything you would have to forego to engage in an activity. I just have to get this off my chest. I just wasted an evening last night, and a whole half of a day, on an experiment I had to scrap, because of someone else's error. Having experienced a mad rush of everyone who's a part of the lab (3 postdocs, 6 grad students, 3 lab techs, some undetermined number of undergrads) being in here almost every day last week, it's rather nice that the only sounds I can hear right now are the low buzz of a discussion on some procedure coming from the other room, and the fan from one ( Read more... )

The "Big State Theory" put forth by H. Clinton supporters- which functionally is that the argument that the candidate who wins the big states in the primary election is more likely to win them in the general election- seems flawed to me for at least one reason, which also seems central to this particular election ( Read more... )
