The Dursleys' efforts to be normal, and the usual backfiring, never fail to amuse me. Duddly is such a spoiled brat, but I admire the manipulation of his parents. I didn't really think of a parallel to Harry and the snake until you mentioned it. Now that I have, it's kind of similar to Harry escaping the crappy life the Dursleys have given him for the fun of Hogwarts.
I am interested to know about the books people are reading... normally when I re-read HP I'm using my family's battered, abused books, which have binding issues and stains galore. 5 through 7 were all obtained at midnight. But those are at home since I got the boxed set for Christmas! So I'm reading crisp, new books[that smell really good].
I looked up the symbolism of snakes in various religions, and most are either sin and evil and death and destruction, but I also found that snakes can represent rebirth and life, which I think fits more to this situation, as the glass disappearing is the Harry Potter's first step back into his old life in the wizarding world.
*sigh* And the first time I read the series, I read Jess's books 1-6, and forced my dad to go out and buy book 7 after I had finished 6. I got the same boxed set for Christmas, so I'm reading that now.
