So what is this thing, anyway?

Well, you've heard of the Oscars, right? Or perhaps the Golden O's of Star Trek fandom fame. That's the idea of the Journos. There will be a series of polls, culminating in a list of the best of the best fics and authors of Harry Potter fanfiction on LJ in 2004. There will be a ceremonious bestowing of award banners and icons upon the winners, and ( Read more... )

Uhm. As someone who is All There for gen, could I propose the possibility of a section for individual characters?

As in:

Individual Characters
Harry Potter
Hermione Granger
Ron Weasley
Draco Malfoy
Neville Longbottom
Cho Chang
etc
etc

Just because there are some really great fics out there that are essentially about just the one character.

At the same time, I acknowledge that gen is not as popular as ships are, so there might not be the same interest in individual character stories.

Just my thoughts.

Maybe instead of individual character categories, you could do a little broader gen categories without lumping them all together:

Trio era:

Trio centric
Other Gryffindor-centric
Slytherin-centric
Hufflepuff/Ravenclaw-centric (not a bash on those houses but I expect there are less gen stories around those characters than Gryffindor or Slytherin)

MWPP era:

MWPP/Lily-centric
Slytherin-centric
other character focused

Other/eras characters

Very good idea, thank you! I'll fix up the categories.

what about art, comics, and vids?

Well, it was originally just supposed to be for fic, but what if I put in broader categories for those, e.g. "Best Slash Art," et cetera? It does seem silly to leave the artists out.

Ha, I ended up doing even better than that. There's now an art/vid/comic category for each designation. :D

Under pairing categories, I would really recommend not listing every single possible pairing. Only the 10-15 most popular in het/slash, and then 'rareslash' or 'rarehet' categories. I say this because it isn't really fair in the case of say... Remus/Sirius where there will be a million nominees, and then Remus/Peter where there might be two.

I would also recommend threesomes/moresomes be listed as MWPP threesomes/foursomes, Trio threesomes, other slash threesomes, other mixed threesomes. Besides Trio fics, they're actually quite rare.

And yet another very good idea. :D
I'll do that, and if any single pairing category doesn't get enough nominations (I'll work out a number or percentage at some point), I'm thinking the ones it does get will just go in with the next broadest designation.
Thanks again!

Can I make a suggestion if its needed deoendign on # of nominatiosn per category... This comes from showing animals... In each "main category" (a "class" in animals; for example, All longhaired breeds in animals or all Remus-pairings) you have mini-competitions such as Remus/Sirius; Remus/Peter; Remus/OMC; Remus/.... compeats (in animals these are our varieties or breeds (with another vareity subcategory under this)). If the category has More than X number (we usually have a 5 animal minimum in a variety class) you award a "Best of" in that vareity. If any variety (mini-category) in a class hass LESS than 5, they get lumped together in a competition under a "AOC:Any Other Coat or Any other Colour" designation (eg: Remus/Any-Other-Character).

So if there's:

15 RL/SB,
10 Remus/Snape;
8 Remus/Harry,
3 Remus/Peter,
1 Remus/Hagrid and
2 Remus/Albus;

You'd award:
Best of Remus/Snape,
Best of Remus/Sirius,
Best of Remus/Harry and then
Best of Remus/AOC (because all the other ones had less than 5 entries)

Would it be terribly objectionable to have a "Best Mpreg" in the Overall Categories? *flees*

I second that! *flees also*

Re. the rules: in order to qualify, does a fic have to be actually posted in one or more LJ entries, or can it be posted in an archive or personal web site and promoted via LJ? I ask because long fics that are not chaptered (or fics with very long chapters) can be difficult to post in a LJ directly. I wouldn't want to see gems like copperbadge's Stealing Harry disqualified due to their length.

Also, I assume you'll be posting instructions for nominatng fics sometime soon?

Oh, and a couple of possibilities for other categories: Best illustrated fic, best collaborative work, best metafic, and maybe a Best of the Worst category (like for good fics featuring the WIKTT Marriage Law Challenge, Snape Manor, etc.?)

Yep, nomination instructions and full Official rules are forthcoming. They're still under consideration at the moment. :)
