Hello folks, I'm back in the saddle with a few updates for you on the upcoming meet-up in London. It sounds as though the general consensus is for something very low-key with a safe space where people can chat to their hearts content about all things fannish. I have some thoughts/plans and these are below the cut to save your friends feeds.
Yeah, I'm worried the £65 could just be too steep. I'm still looking for cheaper alternatives but central London isn't the best for 'cheap' unfortunately. I am going to try to see if I can find something more around the £30 mark and it is possible I could contribute a bit extra to keep the costs down. I'll see what others say, but I think it could be a bit of an ask.
In terms of the Sunday I was thinking meeting around 11:30/midday to give people chance to just get themselves together in the morning. Happy to think more about logistics nearer the time anyway :)
I'll go along if the majority agrees, but frankly I'd be happier if we could keep additional expenses down a little, so sourcing our own food and drink sounds great to me. Any chance of bringing a kettle? I'd gladly provide tea/a jar of good instant coffee ... I dunno, here at home I'd try to rent a room at a church or something, do self-catering and maybe make a donation for use of glassware/crockery and cleanup afterwards. Would we really need all the office supplies and tech stuff, I wonder?
Love the idea of gathering informally/in private on the Saturday night, though. (Are there any places near yours to buy beverages, btw?)
As for Sunday morning, I'd be just as happy with plain lunch around the 1/1.30pm mark -- simply because I can't afford (for health reasons) to wait until nearly mid-day for my first meal of the day. However, I'm sure I can just grab a sandwich and coffee near my hotel for breakfast to tide me over, so no worries. ;-)
Yes, I think £65 is going to be too steep - that's fine, I'll look into cheaper options. The problem with the kind of community center idea is that we are in central London at the height of summer, so there tends to be a mark-up and space isn't cheap or readily available at the best of times sadly but I'm quite sure there will be cheaper options, I'll keep looking. If folks are happy in principle with the suggestion of a private meeting space on the Saturday, I'll go from there. There should be no issue sourcing our own food, and no need to bring a kettle! I'm sure we can sort that kind of thing out from the London end. It's a bit frustrating, because I'm a member of a club which has meeting space we could have used for free but it doesn't open on weekends *sigh* otherwise that would have been perfect
( ... )
Sounds cool to me, and thank you soooo much for all the work you're putting in! Maybe some of us could meet at chatzy or wherever to finalize things in the week leading up to Riddikulus?
Paying for a meeting room would be tricky for me, so if you go down that route i guess I'll try to come on sunday instead. I like the idea of meeting for lunch / drinks.
If folks prefer that option, we might be better to look at a private space in a pub or something which wouldn't have any cost attached to it, but would give us a corner somewhere to chat away to our hearts content. I'll keep looking, but at least it's good to know what people would prefer as it helps focus the search a bit.
Hey! Great that you're taking charge :) I've booked plane tickets down to London now, so I'll be there both days. Whatever everyone agrees to I'm up for it, although I think a room at a pub sounds just as good as other alternatives. Party at yours sounds great! I haven't booked a hotel yet, but since you mentioned Liverpool Street I take it the centre/north-east would be the best area to look?
It might be that we go for a room in a pub, it might work out better value - I'm jotting down ideas anyway :)
I would say any hotels around the Liverpool Street area/East End would work of course, but there are a number of people around King's Cross and Charlotte Street way, and both of those are really easy on the Tube which is why I suggested Liverpool Street - one of the earlier posts has the places people are staying and I think a couple are even in the same hotel so you may or may not want to do that, totally up to you!
